As you will know the actual start of Minis to Monte will be in Tournon which is near Valance.

We are planning to meet at a Mini Specialist in Vienne (about 40 miles north of the start) on Sunday afternoon. More details about this will be published in due course once the recce crew have returned (they are in France at the moment!). Hopefully, it will prove an ideal location to sort out any niggling little problems which may have occured on the journey down and a good meeting point.

As the direct route from the channel ports to the start is some 530 miles a number of entrants have expressed a desire to travel down in with other entrants. Either in small of large groups.

To start with if you want to travel down in a group just leave a message here...

A couple of cars are planning to invade France on Thursday 25th using a northern Channel crossing - probably Dover > Dunkerque and meet up with the Oslo Twist runners probably near Colmar on Friday mid morning(ish).

September was the traditional time that the original Tour de France Automobile was run and BMC Cooper S's competed in 1963, 64 and 69 (no event 1965>68), so we thought why not use some of those roads?

Thursday

After the crossing, a short (50 km) bit of free autoroute to Lille then follow the route of the 1964 Tour de France Auto from Lille to Reims (we have the full details of the original route for this section). Overnight at Reims or maybe a little further on.

Friday

Head east from the overnight stop through the Vosges (a reverse run of part of the 1969 TDF route) via Ballon d'Alsace and Rainkopf (well known hillclimb venues - Cooper Car Co competed at Ballon in 1964) and meet up with Oslo runners somewhere in the Colmar area. We know the approximate route taken and will follow this as best we can. Overnight at Morteau.

Saturday

Carry on down to Tournon to event start.

You will have to arrange all hotels, crossings etc yourself but I will try and provide a basic route book for the Dunkerque > Colmar section. If you want more details as drop me a PM or email to

There are 5 entrants who will be departing from Oslo the weekend prior to the start of the event.  If there are 30 entrants on the event this leaves 25 cars who will need to make their way down to the start.  For some the route option offered by Simon may not align with annual leave periods but some may be able to join up and meet with the Oslo 'twist' brigade.

If you are entered then why not drop Simon a mail stating if you are interested or not.  That way we can gauge how many vehicles we need to cater for.

Hi there,

As new members of the club and lucky entrants of the Mini's to Monte rally, we were wondering if anyone else was going via Dover on the same timescale as us and our inlaws.  We are going to stay in Dover on Friday 26th September and travel over to Calais on the early AM Saturday ferry - our plan is then to travel to a just past halfway point on the Saturday (maybe Dijon although any other suggestions would be appreciated) and then continue the last leg to Vienne on the Sunday.

If anyone else is starting their journey on this timescale, please let me know.

Claire & Jason (Sandland)

:D :) Hi there Devon Maid,s and in laws,

Roger and I will probably work to a similar schedule as yourselves, mainly cos I personally need to be in Rugby on at least the morning of the 26th - cos it is Julie's birthday! However, I need to talk with Roger who is at present, somewhere in the world!

Dear Don & Devon Maids  :D

If you have not any ideas on Dijon hotels look at http://www.travelsupermarket.com

I have booked a hotel with them for the IMM in the Netherlands in May this year. I have stayed in the Campanile there a sort of motel let me know if you have any thoughts, there are also lots of little hotels too.

Hi

There are a couple of us that are also thinking along the same lines. We're not sure yet if we will go via Dover, or Portsmouth. We will go either late Friday night or early Saturday morning and will most likely stay somewhere near Dijon.

Let me know of your plans, it would be good to travel down with a few others :D

Hi All,

Lynn and I are also planning to go early Saturday morning and travel a good distance on the Saturday for an over night stop.  We will be going from Dover and prefer the Tunnel.  Do any of you prefer that option?

Cheers  Peter

Hi All,

I have seen a Holiday Inn in Dijon which seems to be about £40.00 pppn, I must say the French Holiday Inn's seem a little more chic than on this side of the channel - all other suggestions gratefully received though - never even thought about the Chunnel, but will have a looksee.

Somewhere cheap is good for me!:D

The only thing I'm concerned about at the hotels is security. You can steal a Mk1 mini with anything the vaguely resembles a key!

I checked on the tunnel. The prices seem ok at first, but for an "open" ticket that allows you to get on a train on a different time to the one you booked is very expensive.

I've used Speed ferries before on a motorcycle holiday. The crossing is only 50 mins (Dover to Boulogne) and is very cheap.

http://www.speedferries.com/

I might get the overnight boat from Portsmouth (only a few miles from where I live) But its quite expensive :?

Hi Clair,

I have talked with Don we are happy with the Holiday Inn at Dijon on the 27th of September at £76.05p for a twin bedded room.

The ferry with P&O Dover to Calais Departs at 6.25 am on the 27th of September, is a £100  if that's ok with you. Return  on the 5th of September ( time say 1300 hrs time for Sunday lunch you can also go a day earlier as well may find a motel Saturday night)

Don & I think its a good idea to go on the ferry because you get a good breakfast which you don't get on the train.

Just say ok and I will book for Don and myself.

If you wish to email me its rogthehat@gmail.com.

Hi All,

We still prefer the Tunnel. I don't like boats, no sea legs. So we will book the 9.20 train from Dover on the 27th, and then the 17.20 return from Calais on the 5th. Cost is £163.

We  like the idea of staying at Dijon , so is there a volunteer to book the hotel ,or is it best to all agree hotel OK and then do our own booking?

Cheers

Hi Rog and Don,

All sounds good to me - Barry and Eileen (in laws) are away for the weekend so will check it all out with them when they return - do you have any suggestions as to a location to stay which is a more than halfway point on Saturday 4th October.

Also I've been having a look on the Seafrance website - they have a sailing at 7.00am on Saturday 27th and a return on Sunday 5th October at 2.15pm - the price seems to be about £77.00.

Hi Clair,

I find I get a bit of a discount with the AA for the ferry P&O down to £95. but saying that sea France is cheaper, but do they do a nice English breakfast on board?

Hotels on the return how about the Holiday Inn Express in Reims with breakfast, room rate £65

Or the Campnile at Tinqueux just outside the center of Reims, I have stayed in the Tinqueux area but its a bit of a walk into town, but there are restaurants near by room rate £52 no breakfast.

As we are staying at a Holiday Inn in Dijon it might be as well to try them again plus its near the town center.

By the way I will be booking a room for Peter Barratt & Lin in Dijon, when we get down to booking, Peter & Lin are  going on the train.

Hi Rog
Glad you're back safely. Tinquiex is a VERY LONGGGGGGGG walk into the centre of Reims. When we go to Reims we try to stay in centre of town near the pedestrian road with the underground car park. The name escapes me at the moment but the Best Western - Hotel de la Paix and a holiday Inn are on a road leading off it. Plenty of restaurants and night life and I've always found the car park secure having used it for a number of years now.
There is also a Novotel at Tinquueix and a complex which includes cinemas and restaurants.
I've always found breakfasts on Sea France good.

Try the Accor hotels chain for hotels in France - all prices catered for.

The link is for hotels in Reims.
