Hello everyone, just joined the forum prior to rejoining the club as i have just bought a mainstream cooper to go with my mk1 S. still getting used to such luxuries as an alternator, two speed wipers and an effective heater, just wanted to ask a couple of things. Did the mainstream come as standard with spotlights and bonnet stripes? these are both missing on my otherwise very original new car (catalytic converter still fitted!) Also the car needs a couple of new tyres and was wondering if anyone can recommend the falken 165/60/12 tyres over the ten pound more expensive Yokohamas? (never had to buy 12" tyres!) Thanks in advance, will try and get some photos up for your perusal.

Stripes and lamps NOT missing unless added as options. These items were standard on RSP and Spi but NOT on mainstream.
Tyres? I've run Yoko a537 and a539's and the Falkens. Yokos are slightly softer and I suspect tread shifts water better. So, generally, more grip, wet and dry, from Yokos; better wear rate from Falkens - unless you insist on lighting fronts up every time you set off! I prefer Yokos but not to the point of changing the Falkens before they're worn out.

Yes and there were a host of optional extras available from Rover (and John Cooper too) and here's the Rover leaflet:-

| thanks guys for that, very useful info, I did suspect that they were options and the front panel is still the original panel and doesn't have any holes in it. Also am not too keen on the bonnet stripes either! I only collected the car last sunday, an ebay bargain that actually turned out to be a bargain! A weekend with the autoglym awaits...

Sounds like you have quite a find there then and they are great cars too, but it's very easy to get attached to them though.
Well I've owned mine for 13 years now and I don't think i'll ever sell it as it's become part of the family like a pet.
Mine's virtually gone around the clock and for years was our only family car, but it's now relegated to summer fun car and for going to shows and events.
