I've been using Duckhams Q Classic 20W/50 oil in my Mini for the past year and I'm very pleased with how smooth it runs, but where as the colour of the oil was green in the cans I bought locally, I've heard that some cans that came from Mini Spares contain yellow coloured oil?

I'm going to carry out another oil change soon and I've ordered some from Mini Spares as my local supplier is having problems getting any, so is it safe to mix green and yellow Duckhams Q Classic 20W/50 oil together?

I've only ever seen green duckhams, but minispares also sell Morris 20w50 too, could it be that Morris is Yellow and people have just been talking generically about 20w50?

No there was a recent thread on The Mini Forum and someone claimed they'd received a can of yellow coloured Duckhams Q Classic 20W/50 oil from Mini Spares.

I'll have to check mine out.

As far as I'm aware the green has always been a colourant, the Duckhams trademark. Perhaps someone forgot to add it to the mix for a batch! How much commonality exists at manufacture? With BP now owning, and using, both the Castrol and Duckhams brands there could be numerous opportunities for mixing things up.

I thought it had all been part of Burmah-Castrol for ages anyway?

I did wonder if the green was a colourant gimmick, maybe they've just deleted it to reduce costs, or simply forgot to put it in a batch.

Well just to put everyones minds at rest, I checked my new can that came from Mini Spares and the colour of the oil is indeed GREEN.

So I don't know what that person who posted on The Mini Forum was on about, so I'll have to remember to tell them there too.

I'd take it back and enquire why? Surely it should be green to be true Duckhams Q Classic 20W/50?

OK...I took it back and the guy rolled off the complete history of Duckhams oil!!!

(this guy was talking pre war, post war, Castrol buyouts absolutley allsorts of facts & figure) lol..he seemed to weiredly know a hell of a lot about Duckhams oil!!!!

anyway he said it should all be yellow now as the green colour originally came from a pre war ingredient thats no long neccesary. So I said about other people recently buying green stuff, he said it must be really old stock (which I doubt because they would have used tin cans years back) or people are putting green dye in (which he said he had know people to do)!

He said speak to Castrol if I did'nt believe him.

I've not heard of this and so I have emailed Castrol a few minutes ago to ask the question

This is the address I used - hopefully it's correct or will be forwarded if not :?

info@classicoils.co.uk

However, surfing the net I found this from Wilco, a local  motor factor :-

You neeed to speak to Castrol-BP themselves for the answer, Castrol Consumer
Tech Dept tel no 01793 452222

Unfortunately my working hours mean I'm not about between the usual 9-5 that most offices work, so if anyone else wants to give them a call to check up on this then I'd be grateful, as I'm sure everyone else will. :D

Like I said on the other thread, I'll try and phone them tomorrow and then hopefully we'll then clear this whole debate up.

Like I said on the other thread: -

Right I just telephoned them and they said they've now stopped adding the dye for health reasons.

The product itself is perfectly safe to use, but it was stopped at the manufacturing stage for safety reasons.

But it's the same quality oil and the green and now not green oil are both compatible with each other, because it's the same oil but with no dye.

I hope that clears it up, but it does sound like a lame excuse to me?
