That VIN number should also be stamped in to the rain channel of the scuttle panel, right where the rear of the bonnet sits.

I believe later models had it etched into the front windscreen too?

The plate with the VIN number on is generally sited to the left of the ECU on the O/S inner wing panel. The plate will also provide the colour code and trim code prefix too.

Oh and as you own a 1994 model, then you'll probably get more helpful advice in the 'Single Point Injection Rover Coopers' section for SPi Mini Coopers like yours.
