I'm uncertain as to where this photo was taken and it could either be at Beaulieu for the Mini Cooper Register Mini Cooper Day, or it could be a National Mini Owners Club Mini Day event at any number of venues from Stanford Hall to Shugborough Hall etc.

This particular Mainstream belonged to a well known Mini Cooper Register member and it was seen at all the Mini shows up and down the country during the 1990's. I used to chat with him as we both had the same model.

I believe it met with an unfortunate accident and got written off as a result of not being covered on an 'agreed value' policy.

On checking with the DVLA vehicle enquiry site, it would seem that accident took place some time during 1998. I expect I'll find mention of it as I work my way through my archive collection of MCR magazines for the research article I've been doing on early Rover Mini Coopers.

So does anyone remember this Mini Cooper and is the gentlemen who owned it still a member of the MCR today?

Taffy,

I think the car was owned by Martin Garrad and it looks like him in the red jumper. Maybe someone like Rambling or Roger Wall can confirm this.

He certianlly used his car on the first of the Mini Montes in 1996 and one of the trips to Ireland around that time.

Hi Taffy,

:)Robert is quite correct. Martin Garrad is wearing the red jumper. The car was owned by him. There was a lot of controversy about an agreed value insurance claim. The car was also seen on most of the Wye Valley runs as well as many Herts and North London events. Martin was a very knowledgeable Mini enthusiast.

Roger Wall and Martin were inseperable buddies but there was a parting of the ways and Martin moved from Battersea (pronounced Barterseya) to Carshalton. Regrettably I do not have an address, though I am sure that Roger has details. Roger will be at the Bournemouth weekend in eight days time.:D

Thanks too rambling and have a good time at the Bournemouth weekend.

I've only attended that the once and that was back in 1988, but I'm still recovering.

 :P :D

Hi,

The Mini Cooper was owned by Martin Garrad the reg is H670 AMX, who is in the red Beside him in the glasses is Dave Bass both used to be members of Herts & N. London Region. The Cooper was involved in a crash which Martin received a broken knee cap and the car was a write off. If you want to know any more just ask.

As I recall Dave and Martin were good buddies for a while - until Dave's peculiar habits emerged and he had a very nice Van.

Thanks everyone and I was just curious as I unearthed that photo recently and added it to the Mainstream Spotted section of the Mainstream Register.

I just wondered what had become of that car and owner as I used to chat to Martin at the Mini shows.

I don't know whose red Mini is parked alongside though.

whilst doing even more research I came across this little feature that appeared in the June 1995 issue of the MCR magazine and I still have that BBC Top Gear report on video.

It does pop up on YouTube from time to time, but it's then pulled by the BBC for copy-write reasons.
