But as ever Mini Magazine have managed to make the usual small or glaring errors (depending on how you look at it).
I've picked up on a few like the fact the Mainstream didn't get an oil cooler as standard, neither did it get tinted glass either. I might be wrong, but I don't think it came with halogen headlamps as standard? Mine currently has Lucas H4 halogen headlamps fitted, but I had them fitted after I bought it in 1994. Prior to that it had slightly rusted out flat faced halogen headlamps which clearly weren't standard issue either?
They've also slipped up on the description of the alloy wheels and it was from the beginning of the Mainstream Cooper that the wheel nut centres are positioned between the spokes and not in line with them. Their clearly contradicting themselves here as Richards fine example proves. Although some early Mainstreams did get them in line with the wheel spokes and some got a mixture of the two.
I also believe the last UK based Mini to wear the Cooper badge (the MKIII Mini Cooper S) came off the line in July 1971. The Italian built Innocenti and Spanish built Authi Mini Coopers continued for a few more years after though.
I still don't believe that a burr walnut dashboard was available as an option either, at least not for a year or so after Mainstream Cooper production had ended and then you had to go to John Cooper Garages and pay out for his "Hi-Spec" conversion. But I'm not absolutely certain now if that was only available to the new SPi Cooper models?
Oh and is the correct Heritage Shell to use for our Mainstreams classed as a MKVI? Surely the Mainstream Cooper is one of the last MKV shells?
Still a great article though and a great example being featured too.

hi taffy,
my own(now modified) mainstream cooper which i have owned from when it was a three year old one previous owner car came with r.s.p. style alloys on one side and mainstream on the other ( as daft as it sounds i only noticed after i broke an alloy, ordered a replacement and it was different to the one that was damaged but was under the same part no. i also checked with the previous owner who had never changed a thing on the car) the walnut dash i am very sure only came in when the injection cooper came on stream.
the oil cooler, tinted glass, sunroof and halogen headlights were never standard parts but were very very often fitted by dealers to make the spec more desirable
hope this helps Mick
p.s. have a look at talkminis.com i have posted pics on there as northernmonkey

Thanks Mick and some early Mainstream Coopers did either get the RSP LE's type alloys or sometimes even a mixture of the two, I imagine that they were probably just using up the last of the stocks?
I've even heard of some Mainstreams getting the RSP's air filter vent too, but at least Rover weren't being wasteful.

Much of those extras were made available as part of the "Flares, Kinky Boots & Flower Power" options packs and the leaflet flyer is available to see on the Mainstream Cooper Register: -
