I have had two VW Cabrios, and although I don't wish to be nasty, they have both been serious pieces of junk!!! Both cars have had starting issues and often die in the middle of the road! When I try to get them repaired, I am often told that there is nothing wrong with them! I even had a guy push one into his garage and then tell me that there was nothing wrong with it! No one seems to know anything about them or how to fix them. I am looking for a car that is reliable, low maintenance, and good in winter weather. I am also concerned about maintenance costs. I am not real crazy about most of the cars out there, but I do like Minis--mainly because they are compact--I don't like driving big cars! I do not know any one who has a Mini and I am seeking advice from people who own them. Am I looking at the same kind of frustrating malfunctions and service problems with a Mini? Is this just a fun summer car or are they good year round? Are they expensive to maintain? Thanks for your responses!

What type/year of VW Cabrios did you have?
Also are you asking about the classic Mini 1959-2000 or new MINI 2001 onwards.........as the answers to your questions will be quite different for each type? (This is the New MINI area but just checking before posting a reply)

The Cabrios were 1997 and 2001. the 97 was a five speed manual and the 2001 was an automatic. I think they were both 2.0 liter engines. Cabrios are basically Gulfs with a convertible roof. I am interested in the new Minis, not the old ones. Thanks.

VW are not as reliable as years ago but their other cheaper brands like Skoda and Seat seem to be as good as VW's of the past in the UK.
New MINI is a great fun /drivers car in the spirit of the original classic Mini but of course with modern refinements, safety and BMW reliability added. However in general it is not as reliable as say a Honda or Lexus so if that is your main priority then maybe you should consider a Japanese car, although they can be dull to drive in comparism with a MINI.
More new MINI info on the MINI2.com forums or North American Motoring.com but remember most people only post when they have a problem! (1 million MINI's sold worldwide since 2001).
