I am looking at buying an X-reg Mini which has some rust under the front windscreen which has caused the black windscreen rubber to be slightly uneven, and also has some rust under the front headlight which has removed a bit of the paint, and has left an area of black slightly pitted looking metal beneath it. There is also some minor rust bubbling under the other headlight and on the edge of the A-posts by the doors.

Does anyone have an idea of what this costs to have repaired. The paint colour is a solid one, so bits which would need a re-spray would not need a metallic coating.

Cheers, Matthew

Under the front windscreen seems to be a rust hot spot for later Minis, due in part to the thicker windscreen seal.

Trouble is you won't know the extent of the rust damage until the windscreen is removed and you may then need a complete new scuttle panel.

Rust under the front headlights is also very common though and so is behind the A'panels and it can sometimes be repaired without resorting to fitting new panels if your lucky. But I imagine some will state that replacements are the best option in the long run.

The best thing you can do is take it to a Mini specialist or at least a good body shop who knows how to work on Minis. I'm sure your local Mini Club or MCR region could advise you on just who to trust and who to avoid.

Once you do get it all looking mint again, it would be worth getting it thoroughly rust proofed by using Waxoyl or Dinitrol on the favourite rust areas and getting it into all the box sections too.

Well it's going to cost a good couple of hundred quid to be honest, but you won't know for sure until a body shop has looked at it.

As above it depends on the condition, which you wont know untill you've pulled the screen out.

I have heard people say rust was a problem around the screen on later cars, but lets be honest, it was a problem on 'ALL' minis.:D It's just that on the earlier ones you would likely have replaced the seal several times in the cars life because water was pouring through it, and probably repaired any light rust while it was being changed. Later ones dont have so much of a problem with wet carpets though, due to the screen sealing better.

TBH if it's a solid colour you could probably get away with doing it with decent aerosols and some rubbing compound to blend it in. Generally the mix while you wait ones are better than the off the shelf ones, they have better nozzels on them.

It does all depend on the extent of the rust though, a windscreen frame can range from a rubdown and prime to a complete new frame assy (expensive and hard to fit). headlamp blead can just be a clean out and fill, which should be good for 3 or 4 years, but you might find the headlamp mounting comes out with the headlamp, which means a new wing.

Tell that to all the owners who ended up with fried stereo's.

TBH I saw a "T" reg BRG Mini Cooper parked up a few days ago and it was a lovely looking car and clearly owned by an enthusiast too. But the paint was lifting and bubbling all up around the front windscreen surround and few earlier models suffered rust in that area.

Okay the front scuttle always rusted in the corners, but the quality control definitely dropped once BMW took control.
