After ringing around a few insurance companies - the ones who advertise in the Mini magazines, I have yet to find a company who will offer me insurance to keep my car garaged and off the road, without me having to pay the extra for 3rd party cover, which due to my age would be very expensive.

I cannot use the car until the end of the summer as I am not going to be home, but would like to avoid having to leave her in the garage uninsured because it is a big risk!

Any help and contact details for a company would be hugely appreciated!

Cheers, Matthew

Think you may have problems. Presume vehicle isn't old enough to qualify for a full 'classic' policy - these are usually quite flexible in terms of laying up the vehicle. My minis are insured through Footman James whose club member modern classic policy is quite well priced but the option for lay up does not feature. I know the insurance you require can be supplied by Direct Line but I'm not sure if they'd apply it to new business. Unfortunately they won't give a straight quote for what you want, insisting on a minimum third party, fire and theft premium being paid before they cancel the third party element and refund the overpayment. The only problem is they won't disclose the end cost so it all becomes something of a gamble.

Best of luck!

I had my 1990 Mainstream Mini Cooper insured on a modified policy with Adrian Flux (they advertise in the Mini Magz too) for several years and then on a laid up policy whilst it's off the road and safely tucked up in my garage.

I don't know if they'd offer laid up on a new policy though, but I do know they want the full fee paid up front first and don't offer a monthly direct debit plan on it.

Cheers, that has been helpful! I was struggling to find anyone, so perhaps it is because they won't start a new policy for laid up insurance. I think that I may just have to go with the third party idea, and if I insure it under my fathers name the cost should be pretty low anyway - it won't matter using his name if the car isn't being used! Cheers.

I was asking with a view to getting an idea before I bought something. Now have bought it anyway.

Mini 40. If anyone knows anything about them, please feel free to educate me... I think there are 3 different coloured ones, white, blue and red. I know they are 1999 models, but does anyone have any other facts/figures??

Picture attached (hopefully).

Cheers,

Matthew

Like I said on the other thread, your Mini 40 looks mint and it's awesome!

When you do come to insure it, then it'd be worth getting it covered fully comprehensive and on an agreed value policy too, so the insurers can't sell you short should the worst happen.

It looks like we will be trying to get Agreed mileage, agreed value, Third party insurance for now because we fould a policy for Laid up insurance with Adrian Flux, but you don't get any money back if you cancel it mid-term and since I want the car for the Summer it makes more sense for me to just start a 3rd party policy.

If anyone is looking for long term Laid up insurance, Adrian Flux do offer it, and it is cheaper than most third party policies with other insurers. However I found that it is almost as cheap 3rd party with one of the companies used by confused.com for my needs! Don't know if that is useful to anyone!?

Cheers everyone for your help and tips! Thanks Taffy - I will definitely make sure that I get an agreed value policy!:)

The other problem with laid up cover is it doesn't go towards your NCB and if you switch to this cover, your old NCB is then only valid for 2 years.

So covering it TPFT is probably a good idea, because your clocking up your NCB at the same time.
