Hi to all you forummers.
Haven't owned a Mini for decades then just fell in love with the old school look of the 35s, so started looking around for one. Looked everywhere, then got onto this site and now I'm soon to be the proud owner of the fabulous 35 that Matt was selling on the For Sale forum. It's very original with a few nice little touches (ally trims/sporty exhaust etc....very tasteful).
Are there any more 35 owners about?? Is there any club etc for them? Just wondering........
Any advice/tips/recommendations etc that I should know about?
Hope to see you all about soon.
Cheers,
Hilton.

Well I know the MiniWorld Magazine main Mini called "Sputnik" is a Mini Cooper 35 Limited Edition and that's had some very heavy use over the years.

Hi Guys, Thanks for the replies.
Yeah, I saw an article in a Miniworld mag from a couple of months ago and saw the reference to the 35. Tho thoroughly unrecognizable in total body primed shell!
I've picked up my car now and just love it. I think the only non original thing on it's the gear knob.... Love the way it drives. Maybe it's just my memory slipping, but feels to be smoother, quieter in fact seems to have a more 'modern' feel to it than I expected, but still keeping the old character. Have flogged the Toyota I had as the 35 seems like the coolest most functional answer to batting about London in.......and as for those little weekend blasts into the country; well bring 'em on!
Another question (that should maybe posted in 'Know-how'); It's got a veeery small amount of rust bubbling on an A post and under a front light. How involved is it to sort this out? (Iknow rust never goes away completely, but any advice?)
See you about

Well it's very common for any Mini to rust in those areas and any good bodyshop worth it's salt (use a recommended Mini Specialist if you can) can sort that out for you.
The best way to prevent it coming back is to get your Mini waxoyled and that just means having waxoyl or other professional rust treatments like Dinitrol etc, injected into the box sections of your Mini.
So behind your A panels, inside your sills, doors and other areas gets coated in the rust preventing wax and so there's no chance rust can form or spread and it should seep into joints too. This can be done as a DIY job, but it's very messy though, but again a good Mini Specialist or competent body repairer could carry it out for you.
The only trouble is Waxoyl does smell a fair bit, but it does go after a short time.
Anyway sounds like you have a cracking Mini there and definitly one to cherish too!

Hety Taffy,
Thanks for the compliment and the advice.
Yeah the Mini gives me a little buzz everytime I just look at it, let alone drive it.
Gonna try and sort the rust out before winter........Hopefully plenty of sunny days before then tho
I'll be looking out for any more 35s aroung London
Cheers,
Hilton.

Hi Hilton,
Bought a Cooper 35 from a guy in Scotland in june this year,it had belonged to his mother ,whom sadly had died,it had been garaged from new ,waxoyled, original dunlops and had only 12516 miles on clock, seen it on ebay and managed to put the right bid in for it.
What a great buy ,well looked after ,no rust, have spent the last 3 months giving it a good going over, recoated waxoyed area,as well as inside door cavities etc.only part i have had to renew was back box, replaced it with an RC40 stainless steel unit from Minispares,to quality. Took it out on monday for it,s first real run!(fine and dry!!!!!) went up into north pennines,i had forgotten what a great pleisure and priviledge it is to own a real car!
How are things progressing with your Mini?only 200 of these cars built so they need plenty of TLC,hoping to put a stage 3 head etc.on to mine to try to get BHP up to 85/90,hopefully
Happy Mini-ing

Hi Albie,
Great find! I think I phoned up about that one but you beat me to it!!!
Sounds like yours was the dream buy. Mine needs a few little cosmetic things doing but really nothing to worry about. Just get in, turn the key and drive.
Like you, I feel like I've discovered the true buzz of driving a real car again. It seems to turn me into a hooligan.....grinning like a maniac!!
Though it's going to be my main car, it's going to be cherished and if all goes to plan won't deteriorate but become more beautiful . I've now flogged my Toyota which has been 100% trouble-free and to tell you the truth, was a bit apprehensive about only having the little Mini to rely on........well, I'm actually excited about being paired right down to basics. The new Mini advertising campaign hits the nail on the head - every trip is a Mini adventure!!!
See you about,
Hilton.

You're a lucky guy, Albie!!
I'm at the other end of the marital spectrum......the girlfriend''s the one that actually persuaded me to sell what she called the "hairdresser's car"(Toyota) and get a mini, so very little opposition there. What's ironic is the fact that at my age I should be going thru a mid-life crisis and buying exoctic sports cars........but hell, the mini just puts that grin on my face. The maddest thing is that it gets more winks from the girls in London than a Ferrari
Top investment
Lol, you're in the best car to find a better replacement for the ex........look at is as a character test!

PS. Am getting a 60's reg numbet transferred to the Mini so I can discreetly put Black/whiet plates on it to look even more period. (yeah, I know, not strictly legal, but what the hey, not like I'm putting them on a Ford Focus! )

But the police probably will have you for fitting black/silver number plates on a post 1973 car and you may just get off with a warning if you plead ignorance, or a fine if their being bloody minded.
So I agree that they look great, but your definitely going to attract the old bill though.
Anyway I always vetted my partners by their liking for Mini's and if they didn't like them, then they had to go. Probably that's why i'm still married after over 15 years is because my misses adores them too!

Good point re the plates Taffy
I was brought up not too far from you in Monmouth and everytime I went out the local plod/Gestapo would find anything to stop me about, so yeah; know what you mean. Seems a more provincial thing.
I'll see how I get on.....London sometimes has benefits of concentrating on more 'important' issues. Matt, the guy I bought it off had the black 'E' reg plates off his old Cooper on it before he sold it to me. Said he never got any aggro. Maybe I'll keep a set of modern ones in the boot with the excuse "I was just on my way home to fit them". Point taken tho.........famous last words eh!
My girlfriend just looks for excuses to go out in the Mini.......cramped, bouncy, noisy........every single thing she should moan about ticked and present, but she loves it!!
Perhaps this forum should be linked to the Marriage Guidance Council?

| Were there only 200 Cooper 35's made for the UK, and more for other countries like the Paul Smith edition, or was it 200 total worldwide? Thanks.

I don't know for certain, but most LE Minis were made in larger numbers with a hefty amount heading overseas, notably to Japan.
Mini Magazine are currently running a full special report (if slightly inaccurate at times) on such models each month, but I don't know if they've covered this model yet?

I'm about to buy a mini that is being sold as a mini cooper 35th anniversary edition. Is there any way I can use the VIN number to make sure it is what they say it is?

Well I know the RSP and Mainstream Coopers VIN numbers can be used as a guide and the MCR Mini Cooper buyers guide provided all the details, so I can't see why the same doesn't apply to other models too.
But the MCR buyers guide, like the John Parnel bible (Original Mini Cooper & Cooper S - The Restorers Guide), only go up to around 1992 and therefore don't cover the later models.
Since Mini World Magazine have owned such a model from new, it might be worth asking them if they can help you out?
Anyway here's a link to the original sales brochure which should help too (the images enlarge when clicked on): -
http://www.roblightbody.com/mini/brochures/cooper_35.htm
One thing to look out for is that the body number plate is still attached to the bonnet slam panel (it'll be body coloured and fitted to the right, just in front of the alternator). It should start B20S and if it's missing then it's a good indication that the car has had a new front panel and that's either due to rust or a collision. So be wary especially if it's the latter.Last edited on Tuesday June 5th, 2007 09:46 pm by taffy1967 |

Still this site lists just about all the Minis made, including the limited edition models and it does provide some basic information on the limited editions that were marketed in foreign countries.
http://www.minipassionmini.50megs.com/gb/article2.htm
But many of the UK based models on the list were marketed abroad (such as the 1998 Mini Paul Smith LE, which was available in a few other colours in Japan) too. And the details aren't given in those cases.
