I was competing with my Mini Cooper at Knockhill three weeks ago, during the two day’s on competition I had two separate instance were tyres came off rims.

The first time it happened was on the rally stage when doing a 360 deg around a “island”, the car came off tarmac onto gravel. The front passenger side tyre came of the rim. The tyre was on a 4 ½” x 10” Minilife rim, with 31 psi (cold) in it.

The second time a tyre came off the rim, was when doing a 360 deg around a cone on the main track at Knockhill. This time is was the rear, passenger side tyre that came off. The rim was 4 ½” x 10” Minilite (with Cooper S off set) and the tyre had 28 psi (cold) in it. On this occasion, there was a lot of grip and it was difficult to get the car to slide.

On both occasions the tyre was a Yokohama A008 (165X70X10) and the car was turning in a clockwise direction.

A part from taking more time to go around cones, would anyone have any suggestions as to what I could do to prevent this problem from re-occurring?

Adrian

Hi

I have competed on the Yoko tyre for sometime myself, actually on Knockhill as well, and have never had a tyre come off, other than when the tyre was losing pressure and it came off the rim on a hairpin applying the handbrake (i have video evidence off it happening)

i have always run 5 X 10 Minilite alloys (new type) or copies, the only thing i would say is i run 1.5 of neg camber on the front, and a 1 degree on the rear, which means the tyre is in more contact with the road.

i have probably used this configuration since the A008 came out, so i would imagine maybe quite a few thousand competitive miles.

Also the 165 tyre is really designed for 5 inch wheels, perhaps that half inch means you have more "roll" on the tyre

At the risk of a slap from Mini Spares, the Minilifes used to have a bit of a reputation for tyres coming off the rims - maybe the thick outer lip stretched the tyre too much if the fitter wasn't careful?

I ran, along with several others, in speed events with the same Minilife/A008 set up and never heard of this problem. A sudden change in surface under heavy load is something we woudn't have experienced though.
