Friday...

Paddy was driving Paul Roberts ex works car 569FMO on the Rally Stage at the Festival of Speed. This was the first time Paddy had actually attended the Festival of Speed which is now in its 15th year.

1. Paddy waiting to go out on the stage

2. Paddy in action on the stage.

Paddy managed to gracefully put the car on its side towards the end of the stage. With no damage to himself and light damage to the car. Being interviewed by Tony Mason afterwards he said that it was the first time he had managed to turn a mini over.

3. The car afterwards.

I also went to Goodwood today (Friday) and saw Paddy Hopkirk on the rally stage. I Guess Paddys roll video will be on Youtube very soon!:)
Goodwood Festival has to be the best all round motorsport event. Where else could you stand like we were at one point with classic and modern day rally cars flying through the woods right in front of us, whilst at the same time just a few yards behind us old and modern F1 cars + superbikes were screaming up the hill climb track! Later a stroll through the paddocks let us get close up to every kind of motorsport machinery all assembled in one place.

Heres the car had a guide price of 70-80 thousand on the details in front of it but as you say, having looked on the Bonhams site I can't see it on the auction list either?

GRX5D was sold recently by Tom Turkington, to I think Sussex Sports cars, along with 24PK.  24PK was sold on straight away and GRX5D will be in the Bonhams sale at the Goodwood Revival meeting on 31 August, it was just on display at the Festival of Speed as a draw....guided at between £70 and £80ks - so cash in your pension funds now!

Thanks Robert, have to say that it looked very nice, and I am guessing that 80 thousand is not going to be enough to secure that car!

Does a genuine Hopkirk dent add or subtract from the value of the car??? Do you repair or leave??

Ouch:shock:.  Oh well, could be worse.  It's good to see such cars being used for what they were built for - if you're brave enough.

In truth I suppose all these old competition cars have been rebuilt/repaired so many times that a few more repairs won't make any difference in the end.

I really feel for Paddy,  driving Paul Roberts Works Mini 569 FMO at Goodwood, it can happen to the best. however, some of the works Minis were reshelled, some more than once, hiding accident damage to compete on further events. Reshelled or just repaired could still show evidence of later minor damage, for example, Guy Smith,s 1967 Tulip Rally Works Mini LRX 829E. old pictures of the car showed rear end damage and scratches that match the car that was found in 1988 and thereby gave it its history and provinance. I agree that its important to show and use these cars for what they were intended, but if i were the owner of 569 FMO i would repair the car through a specialist but, i would insist on a minor part of the damage to be kept, but not too visible
