"The British cars were equipped with standard headlamps - but the only way of dipping them was to switch to non-standard fog lamp"
An interesting comment -mpi models some 30 years later use auxiliary lamps for main beam ?
I'm also interested to read that Prince Rainer left before the prize giving.

Well it gave BMC and the Mini Cooper S even more positive publicity in the end, probably far more than if they'd been allowed the trophy.

Plus they had their revenge in 1967!

Prince Ranier wasn't the only one who boycotted the prizegiving. Pauli Toivonen didn't show up either.

I'm sure I've seen footage of a rather subdued, and probably embarrassed, Pauli Toivonen collecting his awards.

i think I am right in saying that, so desperate to prove BMC had been cheating during the rally, the French Motoring magazine, Equipe, road tested one of the rally prepared minis against a standard S -- straight out of a showroom in Paris.

They then raced the two minis side by side up a mountain and the standard mini won easily

obviously the Magazine were expecting the Rally Mini to easily beat the standard S, proving BMC substantionally "enhanced" the Rally Minis beyond the rules
