Winner of the 1965 RAC Rally and European Rally Champion of that year Rauno Aaltonen will be present while MiniWorld's Classic Mini contributor Peter Barker drives ex-works Morris Mini Cooper 977ARX in a parade of cars to celebrate 75 Years of the Rally GB at the Millenium Stadium in Cardiff on Saturday 1st December. Works prepared Classic Minis, Coopers and Cooper Ss competed in the RAC Rally, predecessor to today's Rally GB, during the 1960s but only won the event outright once in 1965 when Rauno and Tony Ambrose won in snowy conditions driving works Mini Cooper S DJB 93B.
Celebrations to mark the 75th anniversary of the Rally GB, first run as the RAC Rally in 1932, include not only the parade but also tribute to past World Champions Colin McRae and Richard Burns, plus a live stage of the 2007 Wales Rally GB all at the Millenium Stadium. Thanks Peter, that does sound great and I'll have to see if I can make that.
I like the: - Wales Rally GB “blows the bloody doors off” Millennium Stadium entertainment quote that's used on that site.
The last Mini Cooper to win it's class on that event was exactly a decade ago via the Mini Sport entered car that won Group N.
I was watching in the forestry behind my house when that came thundering by.

I thought Neil Burgess was the last person to win his class in Rally GB in his Mini Cooper in the its last year of homologation.
My preference is the RAC Rally of years gone by when the route went through England, Scotland & Wales.
Even the revived Lombard Rally for 2007 is primarily in Wales.
I wonder if Neil will be part of the celebrations.

I'm not sure, but I know the Mini Sport backed car got a mention on the TV in 1997.

I know and I can't believe my luck, first Doctor Who gets made in Cardiff and now this!

| Neil was the last to compete in a Mini but I'm not so sure he won his class.

Hiya
Yes we are the last team to take a Mini to class wins in the British and World Rally Championship (Class champions A5, 2002 British Rally Championship and Winner of class A5 in 2003 Wales Rally GB).
I'm back in Rally GB this year, codriving in car 131 - BMW 1 series diesel, the only rear wheel drive car in this years event.
Neil
p.s. Mildred Mini is on Facebook - more pics and vids going up soon Last edited on Sunday November 4th, 2007 04:29 pm by Neil Burgess |

Fantastic Neil, pity the miserable buggers won't allow the Mini to compete anymore though.

Neil a fantastic achievement on the world stage, my only regret is not being there to see it. Take it you still have the car, I have followed and researched press details regarding your sucess. A model of 'Mildred' sits proudly in my living room at home.

Thank you very much
It was (still is!) an amazing adventure!
Yes Mildred is still with me, hoping to get her out again at some point this year.
To think - Mildred was the rally car that Latvala (now the youngest WRC winner ever and as I read this, leading WRC Mexico) was refused a drive of.. it was the shakedown for Rally GB and we couldn't risk any damage or added mileage.
