Jumping Jeff, didn't he claim that was a works shell ?

And I think that's Peter driving his own car !

Not sure if that is the shell he claims is ex works as it seems to have Mk 1 back lights with a Mk 2 rear window.

Dear Mini friends

That is me driving 977ARX at Chatsworth. The comparison with Rauno Aaltonen is much appreciated though ...

The show was excellent, sorry not to see many of you.

regards

Peter Barker

One for the MCR next year maybe ? Pity the organisers offered little incentive for classic clubs to get involved, I did notice the club entry list was short on classics. Looked like a great day out though and what a sunny day !

David Archer says......

"It was a good event, allsorts of nice stuff there. The stage was supposed to be 90% tarmac/10 broken tarmac. It might have been under the mud!. Oh and they ran out of numbers for the cars. I had one!

I had 2 choices of tyre with me, 032's and 008's so went for the 32's for the dry tarmac and they did the job on it but were more fun than a barrel of monkeys on the damp mud and under the tree's where it was a little greasy. Apparently 008's were not fairing any better.

M+S next year!.

Came 7th out of 10 and the 2nd Mini, Ray Cunningham pasteing the field and doing some fantastic times (he can obviously peddle it but I'd love to know what's under the bonnet!!), the 2 porches were quick with John Keatley and Steve Perez really pushing them.

A couple of really quick Lotus Cortina's and the remaining where the Mini's.

On the long back straight up to the house, I was flat out in 4th and that's just over 100mph so I was happy!,  Had a couple of moments, one in particular was a monster "tank slapper" at about 50 after leaving a right hander and cutting as per my navvy's comments!! the rut just threw me out of the bend, very light on the inside wheels and onto the grass. Then followed a foot to the boards, point it in the right direction manoeuvre!!.

The car ran fine even after a couple of tests of the sump guard (hump back and some serious dips at speed). Though I think the clutch needs looking at as I think the nearly new release bearing is not that clever.

In short you would have loved it. "

Ray Cunningham is well known in Irish Historic circles. He won the Killarney Historic Rally 2 weeks ago for the 2nd time in 3 years, having been beaten by 1 second in the 2006 event. You won't meet someone who prepares a car as cleanly. The workmanship is immaculate. We're both from Galway in the West of Ireland and Ray told me during the summer that 20 years ago he had the option to buy my Mk1 Cooper from a local vintage enthusiast. He passed up on it back then for a Fiat 500!

He's a member of the Irish Mini Owners Club and consistently wins the Competition class of the club's concours event each year.
