Hi All,
Just wondering if its possible to use this with our MPI's:
http://www.obdspy.com/Products/USB/usb_327_en.html
I've always wanted to attach a PC to the car to see what I can get out of it, but since my mechanic told me I need a new Lambda sensor, and my fuel economy has gone down I thought this might tell me something?
Cheers

| James, I stand to be corrected but as far as I'm aware both Rover systems, Spi and Mpi, although using different Rover MEMs builds are not compatible with OBD-11. There are alternatives which talk to the mini but they're either stand alone systems or part of expandable systems for the professional workshop. I'm not aware of any using an adaptor and freeware software.

No, The mini was developed before EOBD was introduced. The MPi uses the 16pin OBD connector as most vehicles from around 1997 had them fitted as standard in order to make them ready for the introduction of EOBD in 2001ish.
For the MEMS system you can either use the Main Dealer level 'Testbook', made by a company called Omitec, but its probably worth more than your car....
Or there is the Sykes Pickavant ACR system. You should be able to pick up a cable, handset and Rover 4 pod, for about £300 if you get used items off ebay.
There is also an alternative to Testbook, called Rovacom which works off a PC via a dongle, it's around £500 and gives virtually Dealer level diagnostics.

I saw the OBD connector and just assumed it was going to be easy... Oh well!

Just got back from IMM in Holland where many injection cars were analysed free of charge with Rover test book. MMMMMMM!
I will post picture tomorrow but question why Rover ?pi owners do not have support like they do in Europe.
Maybe Southern Mini Days in August will be an event where a UK "supporter" with test book facilities will have the relevant testing facilities. Check out SMOC website for details.

TBH, there's nothing all that exciting about diag machines, you cant actually tweek very much with them. They're only really any use if you actually have a fault.
The mini only has 3 systems it can talk to, SRS, Alarm and Engine. Other than add extra keyfobs (4 total), prgram new alarm ECU's then there isnt really a lot you can do on the mini.
It's different for say the Rover 75 or Land-Rovers, where you can set user prefferences, like wiper delay, window total closure etc, as everything is computer controlled on CAN-bus vehicles.
With my Sykes ACR4, you can display live data as you drive, but really its nothing you cant buy in the form of smiths gauges.
Main reason why you dont see people with Testbook at shows is they're around £17'000 to buy new.

Excuse my ignorance here!
I have a spi and I am trying to resolve issues with the cars failing the MOT on emissions. I did visit someone who had one of these diagnostic readers, but he is quite as distance away.
Now looking on ebay I have come across this a Sykes ACR4, presumably I also need a pod with Rover details on... here? and the right cabling?
Any advice here!

They'll do, then you'll want the 3 pin Rover harness for your spi (unless its one of the oddball ones with a OBD type plug)
The harness's are about £60 from Sykes new, so dont pay more than that for a used one.
The Handset is a good price, i think the list is about £400.
YOu could use an ACR2 handset with your car and that pod also, you can usually find these quite cheap, basically they only have a 2 line display rather than 4 and i dont think they'll do ABS/Airbag, but that wont be relevent to your car anyway.
