Hi all,
My wifes car is just about to roll over 100,000 miles and I think its due an engine rebuild. Its been a smooth engine and not given us any problems but the big ends are starting to knock a bit now.
Does anyone know of a good Mini engine builder around the Harlow, Essex area? Also how much ££ would I be looking at during a rebuild? I'm not after any more power or modifications, just a nice smooth running engine.
Also is it cheaper to get the gearbox rebuilt by the engine builder or to buy a recon box from someone like Mini Spares?
Cheers

| Try Pat Healy of Nazeing on 01992 892919. I had my engine and gearbox rebuilt by him about 3 years ago with a few tweeks here and there. I know several other people who have been too him and like me have been very pleased.

Yo
Cheers for the info. I'm sure i read somewhere about a guy in Nazeing but couldn't find anything on the net/yellow pages.
Do you mind if i ask how much it cost you? was it £300-400 or more like £800-900...?
Cheers

Its difficult to say as I had a lot of other work done at the same time. It wasn't a standard re build. New swiftune cam, duplex kit, re-bore, pistons, cylinder head re worked, centre oil pick up, new gears, new sub frame plus others etc etc. It wasn't the cheapest, but I did ask for anything that was showing signs of heavy wear or was likely to fail to be replaced with new parts. I have been very pleased with the results. Think its going to be on the higher side of your estimate, but I can't speak for him.
All I can say is that I was recommended Pat by others who have used his services for many years. He has built engines for mighty mini racers and cars in the mini seven series. I have seen his engines in coach built cars and early cars that have been restored to show standard. He knows his stuff and I have now been using him for 3 years with no problems. I now take my Fathers John Cooper Si to him and if i'm asked who I would recommend I say Pat.

Personal experience suggests that one should not always go for the cheapest quote. Quality comes at a price which is not always in the land of the next Olympic games.
I have used Pat 3 times, at least. Not in the same car. Ask him to quote.
