Hi all,

Both our MPI's have just had thier MOT and they only just passed on the emmisions.

The MOT guy said it was a high HC and he said the Lambda sensor needs to be replaced.

I had a look at Mini Spares and they are £100 each! Also they are in a bit of a nightmare place to get to (I assume you have to remove the LCB to get it out?).

Any recomendations for what I should do?

Cheers

Well assuming you have the standard manifold its best to take it off and put it in a vice, as the sensors tend to be well in there.

A good excuse to fit a tubular one! Although the standard Injection manifold flows pretty well anyway.

I've had problems with emissions when having MOT's - as a lot of garages don't understand the old A series emissions(40 year old engine being expected to meet the standards of the modern world) and the placement of the L sensor.

There was a dispensation and the emission limits were adjusted(Special notices from the Vehicle inspectorate 04-2003 Annex A section 2).  This informed MOT garages that there had been a misprint in Version 9 and that the Lambda figures were wrong.

This information doesn't mean that your Lambda sensor is okay but one problem that the mini has is that the sensor gets coked up - especially if you are only using your Mini for short trips.  My advice is before you have an MOT take your Mini for a thirty minute blast - foot to the floor!  This will heat the sensor up and clear the coke.  It worked for me and so when someone tells you the sensor is in need of replacing give the mini a run and get it retested.

Yo

My MOT station is about a half hours drive down national speed limit roads so it had a good run before hand.

The MOT tester said the HC was high and i'd probably be using more fuel so I've checked and my fuel econemy has gone down from 42mpg to 36mpg!

Should I replace the Lambda?

Cheers

Does the cooling fan run all the time when the ignition is on but engine not running?

Well there is only one set of MOT emmisions figures for cat equiped cars (of any make) and all built after k reg have to meet this. There was a special dispensation for vehicles that couldnt acheive the standard even when new, provided the original manufacturer provided evidence for this. However all Cat equiped minis should be able to pass the basic MOT cat emmisions test fine, this is especially true of unmodified injection engines. My own MPi with the JC coversion passes with flying colours every year, it's always way under on all the tests.

There is however a chart that states what the different readings should be for a given engine, this is to allow you to diagnose how well the engine is running, ie. too rich, too lean etc. There is only one minimum standard that all cat equiped cars have to pass though, regardless of how old the engine design is and how much the tester understands about the engine in question, so long as your car is within the minimum standard it will pass the MOT.
