Hi All,

Just doing the rear shoes on the back of my wifes car. Did the near side fine, no problems. Just replaced the cylinder on the offside and put new shoes on, but the drum will not go over the new shoes!!!

What am I doing wrong? The adjuster is all the way out, so the shoes are as 'small' as they can be in the drum. The bottom of the drum goes slightly further over than the top, but other than that it refuses to budge.

Thoughts?

Cheers

James, 2 suggestions although having done one side you've probably covered the first. 1) Is adjuster fully home, it's possible for them to rock and stick whilst you're fighting the springs. Are shoes on adjuster bearing surface. 2) Are pistons in the new cylinder fully home? Being unlubricated, and possibly with hardened rubber grease on seals, it's possible for them to be able to overcome the springs until they move for the first time.

Yo

I've got it on!

The handbrake quadrant was a bit seized. Although it moved when the handbrake was operated, it wasn't letting it off completly.

Cheers

a friend of mine once had the same problem in reverse, couldnt get the drums off. He rang me after an hour of trying and swearing, he;d wound the adjuster out but they wouldnt come off.

I asked "have you left the handbrake on?", answered with silence, and then 'oh shit':D

Yo

another problem with it is now that the wheel is back on and i've adjusted the handbrake, the wheel seams to be binding when spun backwards.

What could cause that?

'some' binding is normal, as in rubbing of the linings.

There are two causes either you have the shoes on around the wrong way.

or the shoes just havent centralised. each time you adjust the adjuster, you need to either jerk the drum forward and back sharply or pull the hand brake up and down a few times to centralise the shoes. Some people do it by whacking the drum with a hammer, but than can put the drum out of shape and make it buldge inside.

So i'd try working the handbrake a few times, you'll probably find the problems cures its self. As i said though 'some' rubbing is ok

Especially if it's only backwards. Possibly not quite enough chamfer on trailing edge of linings - if so a couple of hundred yards down the road should have it sorted.

Exactly and being new shoes the linings are very thick and need a little time to bed in.
