Looks mint and tasty, I like the (Group 2?) wheel-arches & chrome trim too, they make a great alternative to the black plastic standard jobs. Last edited on Monday December 18th, 2006 02:33 pm by taffy1967 |

Do you know if the holes for your arches line up with the holes previously used for the standard plastic wheel arches?
I like the look of your Mini and I know the misses will too as she loves the chrome trim look too.

Taffy,
I fitted my Mainstream with fibreglass Group 2 arches from Huddersfield Spares. They came with soft plastic trim to go on the arch lip between the arch/body and the indents for the holes (you need to drill them yourself) lined up perfectly with the holes for the Rover plastic arches. Huddersfield advertise in Mini Magazine regularly. Having said that, many people seem to swear by those supplied by Somerford. By the way, I secured my arches with stainless steel allen bolts/nuts, rather than screws or pop rivets. One day I will get around to posting some photos of my Mainstream, though she does not look much like one now with her 10" wheels etc.
Blwyddyn Newydd Dda (forgive mis-spelling, been out of Wales too long and was not a speaker even then).

Sounds good but do they come with the chrome sill trim too? If not can it be fitted like on Ben's car?
Oh and don't worry because I don't speak a word of Welsh myself.

yeah its a place called mini technique in pilling lancashire, they are real enthusiasts for anything mini metro or built by sir alec.
he had a lovely MG metro which was totally standard and with no rust, the wife had to physically restrain me from buying it!!
not much on there site but they have a huge mini only scrap yard http://www.spares4minis.com/

Hi Taffy,
The chrome strip was extra (came in a roll). Was a sod to fit, as I did not warm it up enough first to make it really pliable. Still, it does not look to bad, just rucked/kinked very slightly where the wheel arches meet the sill, as it has to turn through two directions. As I used nuts & bolts, fitting the arches involved removing the fuel tank and the rear trim panels by the rear seat/bins, which was a bit of a faff. Go for it!

Thanks Richard I think we definitly will in the new year as it's a neat way of fitting the chrome sill trim but also keeping wheel spats.

Well that's how the 1990 RSP Mini Cooper LE came, with colour coded wheel arches.
But were they special wheel arches, or just painted standard types?
Won't the paint peel off standard plastic arches?

I painted one of the arches on my mainstream. I managed to break one and as they had been painted by a bodyshop before I acquired the car, I decided to match one rather than buy a new set of four.
I primered them up and sprayed them with a standard paint aerosol. The finish is very good and matches the car well.

the mini "special" arches as fitted to all 12" wheeled cars are the same as the RSP ones.
to be honest as long as u give the arches a wash to remove the release agent the paint shouldnt give u any problems, although i will be using a plastic primer before the high build primer to be sure.
