ok ive evicted my dad and his long running MG V8 project and i have the garage till xmas. Im planning a semi restoration centering mainly on suspension parts and panels/respray, and im converting it to 10" wheels and going retro.
what i was wondering was wether i can replace the front subframe mounts without actually removing the subframe? im fitting hi los so the turret bolts will be out anyway so can i just undo them and lower it slightly and jiggle them in? Also what about alignment afterwards? is there a sequence for tightening them up? Same for the rear subframe shud it align just by doing the bolts back up?
Ill post progress reports if anyones intrested, any help is very much appreciated.

I'm just undergoing the same thing to mine at the moment.
I replaced my front subframe mounts for solid ones the other week while the subframe was still in the car. the car will need to be supported on axle stands and the subframe also needs supporting so to allow you to lower the subframe down (but not under the engine as the engine mounts way split). the engine's top mount will also need to be undone before you lower the subframe to fit new mounts.
Undoing the front and rear mounts should not cause you any problems with alignment. the turret bolts should line back up when the other two have been fitted back, but the locating holes in the body are slightly bigger than the locating point on the subframe so a little manoeuvring may be needed so they can be lined up by eye.
The rear subframe should just fit straight back into position.

| thanks thats reasuring to hear. i have put it on a plank of wood to spread the weight across the floor pan but i had to put a couple of small blocks above the axle stands to clear the brake pipes, however i looked today and ive got sum bulges forming on the floorpan do u think these will go when its lowered back down?

Ben it's probably wiser not to lift or support you're Mini via the floorpans (or sills).
Their just not strong enough to take all that weight without deforming.
It's probably wiser to position it on axle stands which are positioned beneath the rear of each wheelarch, just where it meets the floor because you shouldn't have any problems there.
I think we've all learned by our mistakes when it comes to supporting our Minis and even my own father is guilty of doing the same whilst fitting adjuta-rides to mine over a decade ago.
Unfortunately the floorpan will need tapping flat with a rubber mallet. But it might be worth carefully heating up the bitumen soundproofing floor coating, otherwise it's sure to crack when you start bashing the floorpan back into shape.Last edited on Tuesday September 25th, 2007 10:56 pm by taffy1967 |

I Managed 2 get the rear subframe off tonight and ill start dismantling it tommorow, the car seems very clean underneath thankfully.
