Had a mooch round the engine bay on Saturday and found some disconnected wires.
The first one is fairly straight forward but see what you think.
On the lid of the brake fluid master cylinder, there is usually two Lucars plugs connectors opposite each other.
Well on mine there is only one attached! i found the other one "dangling" underneath and its dangling because it has a snapped spade on the end so will not plug into the opening on the lid) Am i correct in thinking this is the brake fluid level sensor?
What are the dangers of running without this connected (it was like this when i got the car two weeks ago)
Also, is it a simple job of reconnecting a new Lucars spade when i snip the old one off and should it be soldered or just crimped.
There is another loose wire buit i will put it in a different thread to aid confusionLast edited on Monday July 9th, 2007 09:58 am by special k |

The only danger is that if you're brake fluid level drops, the light on the dash switch isn't going to light up as a warning.
And yes you can simply crimp a spade connector on to the wire, which will generally be stronger than trying to solder it instead.
Or you could buy some of those fancy connectors with heat shrink tape, which really isn't necessary.

Thanks Taffy,
I get the feeling that Rover made those wires just a tad too short so you can't tighten the cap without ripping the plugs off!!!
I could add a connector and some longer wires i guess tho, would that be alright?
The other wire i found was laying next to what the manual describes as the wiper motor earthing point...the wire does look as if it was bent in such a way that it fitted to the top of the wiper motor bracket, but i dont want to connect it till i'm sure.
Our mini 1000 has the tab there in the same place, but no wire at all going to it.
Would it help if i put a picture up?
Cheers

Spesh, if the wire is black it's an earth. If it's any other colour check very carefully before you connect it but if it has a black tracer you'll probably be ok. Looking around wiper motor in wiring diagram for wire colour you have may give you a clue.
Master cylinder cap always looks as though it should be removable without disconnecting wires but I've yet to find one that allows it without trying to destroy the wire/connector joint. I always just remove them completely before starting any work.

Well the master cylinder wire/spade connector looks fine, it's just the connector that's broken/missing from the master cylinder cap.
Quite a common thing to happen really since they turn a funny colour after a while due to the brake fluid I imagine?
So you either need to buy a new cap or look out for a good second hand one and re-use one of the connectors off it.
As for that spade connector by the wiper motor, well mine is attached to that little connector poking out of the top/side.
Hope that helps.
