Hello,
can anyone shed any light on the hif38 carb,i believe fitted to early Rover coopers?
I intend on fitting a used carb to my mk11,however only had experience with early set up such as hs2/4 carbs which appear simple i.e one fuel hose fitting point to the float chamber. But the hif carb has numerous hose fitting points, one for fuel, but for the rest???? I will be greatful for any help or diagrams.
Cheers
John

the other 2 are breathers i believe.

Not sure if you already know but the hif carbs will hit the bulkhead on a standard subframe. The RSPs had modified subframes to solve the problem, and later cars had a different frame with the mounting points moved.

If you do try using carb, info you requested is as follows. From manifold face towards bulkhead - vent from charcoal canister and engine breathers; float chamber vent to charcoal canister; fuel in.

Charcoal canister is used as part of open loop catalyst set up to contain fuel vapour. Uses temprature controlled vacuum switch to feed vapour back into engine once warmed up.

Suggest in your application front connection could be sealed or connected to engine breather. Float chamber will require some sort of vent but not sure of the implications of connecting these 2 ports together. Have fun!

No early Rover Coopers (RSP & Mainstream) used HIF44 carbs, non Cooper's generally used the HIF38 after around 1990 before the whole range went fuel injected a few years later (but the Cooper went 1.3i from late 1991).

Hello, and thanks for your replies, seems the hif38 maybe a bit of a pain in the a--e,
think i`ll stick with the hs4 carb far more simple and the same size.
cheers
