This colour chart that appeared in the March 1996 issue shows that as far as the membership goes, Black was the rarer of all the colours. Well except for the only White one that was sent to Japan: -

I'd imagine the RSP Cooper Register would known more though?: -

Of the cars I know of, approx 25% are Black.
40% are Red, and the remaining 35% are Green.
Taffy - wasn't the White Cooper a pre production mainstream rather than an RSP, or did it have the RSP features?

That's a good question because the information I unearthed does seem to contradict things slightly I think?: -
This appeared in the July 1991 issue: -

So yes it does look like it started out as a Mainstream and then got modified to RSP spec? Many won't believe that the Mainstream and RSP's were coming off the line together because it's commonly believed that the Mainstream followed after RSP production had ended.
There was more information on the RSP in the Jan/Feb 1997 issue which pretty much went over what was said before: -

I've provided more of my findings here: -

But you might fall asleep reading it all.

So esentially the RSP wasnt the 'water testing' excecise that they've been described as by various sources.
Clearly Rover had already decided to produce the 'new' Cooper in volumes, because they already were!
The RSP was actually just an introductory special edition to raise the profile and initially kick start the sales of the new model.
People have said the RSP's were Flame/checkmate/racing LE's with other bits added on, but actually if they were already building mainstreams on the adjacent track the RSP was simply a Mainstream with some optional extras added on, Sunroof and spot lamps were factory options on the Mainstream.
Just out of curiosity where were 'Rover Special products'? Were they based somewhere int he Longbridge complex or elsewhere?

Hb, Taffy's last page from the mag says the RSP bits were added at Cowley. Now BMW?

Well at the time the cowley plant was still Rover (making the R800 and Montego's i think) but yes it;s now the same place BMW build the new mini.
So Rover made these cars, then loaded them on road or rail transporters then took them from Birmingham to Oxford just to stick a few other bits on them?
They wouldnt actually have fitted many parts at RSP either, the headlights, spot lamps, alloys and sunroof would you assume have been line fited at Longbridge, after all they were only standard optional parts which you could have on the Mainstream and even the Non-Cooper cars (flame/racing/check etc).
Which only leaves the seats, steering wheel, fan and oil cooler?! but they must have left longbridge with some seats in?
If they were as it appears building them on the same track as the mainstream cars, you can see how Rover never made any money!
