I'm looking for advise on a car though I'm fairly sure what the answer will be.
I'm based in Ireland and a classic car club that I belong to has just purchased a 1970 "Mk3 Mini Cooper" to be raffled for an annual charity auction. Before I advise the club of its mistake I want to be fairly sure of my facts here as I'm a Mk1 man myself and there may be varieties I'm not aware of. Here's the details as I know them:
1. It was registered in the UK as FGX 696J;
2. It's on 12s and has stick-on chrome arches;
3. There's no right hand tank.
Apart from a host of other shiny bits, it reeks of tarted-up standard 1000.
Am I paranoid here? Clearly there's a huge difference in the value of a 1-litre and a genuine Mk3 S.
If anyone can offer advice here, please let me know. You can also PM me if you don't want to publish your comments.
Thanks,
Billy

The lack of R/H tank is the most concerning on your list.
Simon (aka Mk3 S Meister) should be able to help on this one.
Any pictures available that might help us to advise.

There was of course no such car as a "mk3 Cooper". By the time the Mk3 was introduced the 1275 'S' was the only model and all had the twin tanks.
A bit more digging needed. It could be a reshelled Cooper S or an 'upgraded' Mini 1000 I suppose. What does the logbook say?

I put the reg number in a parts website at my local motor factors and this is what that reg came up as:
FGX696J Morris Mini Car, 1.3 , Cooper S , Not Limited Edition , Saloon , 2 Door , Manual g/box , 4 Speed , Petrol , Carb., not Turbo , 4cyl. , OHV , 8v , FWD , RHD , 1275 cc ,
Year range from : 01/04/1964 - 30/06/1971
Chassis No. : XA2S1N215951
, Engine No. : 85076
I think it was probably a standard mini 1000 as that does not look like a mk3 S chassis number or engine number.I would say years ago someone changed the model and engine capacity on the V5 (years ago i beleive you could do such a thing).
Hope this is helpfull.

XA2S1N215951
That is the chassis number from a Mk 3 Mini 1000 probably built around October 1970.

Folks,
Thanks very much for all the replies. I will try to scan the pages from the club newsletter but you have basically told me what I already expected.
Just one thing, mk1CooperS, What does Date of Liability refer to?
Thanks again,
Billy

It refers to the last time its UK vehicle tax disc expired, so, in theory, it was last on the road in the UK in 2004

Here is the ad taken from the particular club's magazine. Unfortunately the photos haven't scanned well but as you can see, it's being pushed as a concours machine and while it may not be a rustbucket, it ain't no Mk3 Cooper S.

The car has been re-registered here in Ireland as 70G857 and if you input this in http://www.cartell.ie (Irish equivalent of HPI) it comes up as Morris Mini 1000.
Quod est demonstratum,
Billy

As a follow-up, I received my monthly copy of Irish Vintage Scene magazine in the post this morning and following representation to the relevant club officers, based on the knowledge gleaned from the contributors above, the car is now being offered for raffle as a Morris Mini 1000 rebuilt to Cooper specification.
Thanks to everyone who contributed their knowledge to the above discussion as it has helped prevent a potentially messy situation whereby the future owner of the car could have rightly claimed he/she had bought a ticket for an incorrectly described car.
Thanks again,
Billy
