Hi all!

When i stripped the engine of my project I found installed a 649 cam. (along with 60 thou oversize pistons, lightened flywheel, HS4's but fairly standard looking Cyl head!)

Block is now back from the shop with its new 60 thou pistons and new cam bearings,

So, the time has come to decide on a camshaft.

I am wanting a period 'BL Special tuning' specification for this engine  and the publication I have from the period list numbers such as 567 etc, however I wanted to put it to the forum to taste some actual experience of what has been tried and tested as opposed to selecting a spec out of a book!?

Cheers-

-Shane.

I always like the 544 rally cam, lots of low down power :)

I find the Swiftune SW5 cam quite good.

If you want it period then i would also go for the 544 (I think its a 643 in spider drive?) but the SW5 is supposed to be a better all round cam.

Favourite camshafts make an interesting thread - what are people's cam of choice for each of the different engine sizes??

I'll start the ball rolling by reccommending the Kent 286 for a 1071 motor running a 3.9 diff ;)

I had a Kent 266 in a 1275s -- (1340) and it had so much low down torque that when I floored it, it felt like the front subframe was going to rip itself from the rest of the car and disappear down the road.

I could induce severe whiplash to unsuspecting passengers when accelerating hard thru the gears

(but i did go thru 2 Gearboxes -- although that may have been from using to thin an oil)

I also had a 266 in my 998 Cooper with maniflow/RC40, and the Torque from low revs was really good, not really a screamer at the top end though.

Camshaft choice is always a compromise, if only it was easier to swap them with the motor in place !

Good choice Niall

There is just such a discussion on the Minifinity forum under tuning "our personal cam options".  You've got the boy racers but this forum also has a lot of input from engine builders such as Keith Calver and Morspeed (ex. MED).  Hopefully this link takes you there.

Thanks for this, interesting that the Kent 276 gets a pretty poor rating when i recall a certain Mainstream Cooper with one fitted going rather well;), albeit with high lift rockers...

I've always thought that particular cam was special as I couldn't torque the head down without the followers compressing at least two of the valves even when fully slacked off. The valve springs suffered from spring crush which means the lift must have been high. I don't get this with the 286 cam or the other engine that I put another 276 into. It did go very well whilst it lasted
