I've deicided to replace some of the cooling system on my GT as it looks like its had better days.

so...I first tried to drain the old 2core rad (but no drain plug & cant get near the drain plug behind the cylinder block)..so though I would have to drain the water from the bottom hose! (how the bloody hell do you get to it)?

thought I could lift the rad out enough to undo the jublee clip so I tried to remove the ultimate engine steady but two of the bolts just keep turning & turning but dont come out...how can I get these out? will I have to get a special tool?

anyone got any tips?

Craig.

Hi Craig,

You normally get to the bottom hose clip with a long screwdriver. That's if the previous person to fiddle with it had the foresight to position it so it is accessible from up top. :(

Easiest way is to disconnect the bottom hose from the water pump and heater hose and lift the rad out with the bottom hose still fastened. Provided you position the hose correctly on the new radiator, then it's easiest to fit and secure the hose clip 'on the bench'.

Never had anything to do with aftermarket engine steady bars so over to someone else for that one! :D

nope cant get to to screw on the bottom jublee clip, I started to try from the water pump just before dark but the bloody jublee srew started to round...sprayed some wd40 & I'll try tomorrow. Do I take the rad out full of water & empty once it's out of the engine bay then?

compleate nightmare though..just no room to move at all...feel sorry for you normal mini people with even less room under the hood!

Yes, that's what I would do. Provided you are careful you shouldn't spill any water anywhere. Some clips have a hex head so you could possibly get a small socket on an extension to undo it. If all else fails, you'll have to cut through it with a hacksaw blade and renew the hose as well (which is advisable if it is anything but almost new).

Make sure you work some copper slip grease into the new clip mechanism so it'll come undone next time. ;)

Cheers andrew!

As for the engine steady bolts I belive someone will have to hold them in place from inside the car inder the bulk head while I undew them.

with regards to fan's should I upgrade to a six blade fan or just stick to the plastic 11 blade?

Are the bolts you are trying to undo on the bulkhead where the heater hoses are?, if so you will need someone in the car, as they have nuts on them, there is a cut out in to bodywork so they are reasonably easy to get to

Ah, I know where it fits to now :D

Regarding fans, the 6 blade one will probably be noisier but not sure re cooling advantages. Pete (Glen Ponder) has/did have (?) a 1275GT so might be better able to answer.

Got a mate to help this morning (I held the nuts from inside the car & he undid the nuts on the bolt head), had to cut the bottom hose off as the jublee screw had totaly gone.

So everythings out...BUT I have noticed a split in my subframe! its on the edge/corner of where the subframe turns flat just before it fits to the bulk head. I think it has split over the original weld I'll try & get a pic).
