Were any of the Mk3 Cooper S's fitted with EN40B nitrided crankshafts?
In Australia this engine was fitted to Clubman GT's untill late 1972 - the GT had both the Mk2 S engine (9F/XE/Y) from the start of production in July 1971 till Oct 71 when the 1200/**** series of engines were fitted. These I thought were Mk3 S engines with the tuftrided cross drilled crank, but some (perhaps all) I have seen here seemed to be fitted with the the nitrided crank.
The late ones do not have the cast rockers though - were these fitted to the Mk3 S?
BTW when the S blocks were used up the GT was fitted with the 1300GT engine - in Australia numbered 1206/****
Cheers from New Zealand

I don't know that answer, but I thought these classic Aussie Mini brochure covers may be of interest?: -

| I have seen an AEG 623 (MK 3 S) crankshaft with EN40B on it but as to whether it was nitrided or not I couldn't say.

Have you seen cranks marked AEG623 that are the tuftrided EN16T type? My friend here has an AEG623 EN40B crank out of one of the last Clubman GT Mk3 Cooper S type engines. Did no Mk3's have the tuftrided crank - perhaps they are just later replacement parts?
EN40B is the steel they used for nitriding - all cranks marked that are nitirided (but not all nitrided cranks have EN40B on them.
Thanks Taffy for the nice ads!

| The majority of Mk 3 S cranks are EN16T - EN40B ones are quite rare.

Hi,
I just pulled the crank out of my Aussie Clubman GT engine which use the Mk3 engine. It is marked AEG480 in cast numbers. It is not marked EN40B and not stamped in any small letters like you sometimes see.
Is that still a nitrided crank? - it does go "ping" - similar to my other crank which is marked EN40B
Cheers, Graeme

| The AEG 480 was also fitted to later Mk 1 Coopers S's.
