Hi

So my shell has been stripped to a bare shell and restored, it moved to France back to the UK, two different owners AND The commission plate has been removed AND in the mayhem of all the moves I have lost the thing!

Is there anywhere I can get the number from to get a new commission
plate made?

Fingers Crossed
Matt

If its a very early Mk 2 (a 1967 built car) then it may be in the Production Records at Gaydon - the only other hope is that a previous owner registered the car with the MCR and gave full details to the Registrar

Do you know what the original uk registration number was? or when it was exported?

Ok just a quick note.

I must appologise for my poor use of exclamation marks it was never intended to imply I was directing blame onto anyone for not doing their job.

In the end I am totally to blame for not taking care of the commission plate once it was removed from the shell.

Once again I appologise and will in future be more carefull with how I write my posts.

Regards
Matt

Hi Matt, this may be a long shot and sorry to have got your hopes up if you have already tried this avenue, but have you contacted  the Kithead Trust on tel no. 01905 776681 as they hold a lot of old pre DVLA registration records and "key "cards that usually gave details such as chassis and commission numbers. I say a long shot since although the reference book I have mentions that they hold records for your car's reg no. PB, they only seem to have reg nos. listed up to 1945 at the time the book was printed in 1998. Alternatively, you could try Customs and Excise as if the car was formally exported there must be a record of it some were leaving the country and I would have thought a commission number may well have been quoted to identify the car rather then a uk reg no. Any way best of luck in your quest.

PB is a Surrey registration for which the post 1945 records have been destroyed. Kithead do hold a lot of old registration details but most of what they do hold relates to PSVs (buses).

I can't see why Customs & Excise would get involved in the export of a vehicle, they would be more interested in one coming into the UK.

I did say it was a long shot with the Kithead Trust. I agree with you that Customs may not have been interested in the car when it went to France (my mistake - apologies) but they would have been when it came back to the UK.

Thanks for the advice guys

When I said it went to France, it left the UK as a bare shell and boxes of parts. Ready for restoration, which didn't start, until I purchased the car and it returned to the UK, so there was no export or importing.

Well good news today I found the lost commission plate.

It was of course put somewhere safe, and I stumbled across it today, thank goodness.

It was one of those things that would have annoyed me every time I looking in the engine bay.

I know it is not a very interesting post but I was jumping with joy that it had reappeared.

I hope all the parts I have mislaid show up:( all part and parcel of the process. The latest campaign has seen me get a load of lidded plastic bins with an inventory for each, should of done that 15 years ago. Keep the good work up Matt and more pics to help us get inspired.

I've got to own up..... I've mislaid some parts of mine too:?.  Hopefully they'll turn up somewhere as I've not knowingly thrown anything away but parts of the car are scattered  throughout various garages, a storage container, the loft and elsewhere!....
