| have a look at this one ebay number 220206631841. as posted before I am looking for a good, honest mk2 cooper. didnt think my budget could in any way stretch to an s. However this one seems to good to be true, so it probably is. I've made contact and am being told that the guy bought it 2 months ago from a friend, who had it for 25years, but has now lost storage space so needs to sell it. Also says it has a 1275 engine built not an s. Would this make such a difference to the price. It needs brakes bleeding, tyres, and a few cosmetics for an MOT but although not concourse is sound Am I looking a gift horse in the mouth or am I being taken for a ride. Any pointers would be appreciated

The pictures don't show a lot other than a poorly modified front panel for the oil cooler.
Get as many numbers as you can and check them out - Nick Hunter (Mk 2 S Registrar) would be a good place to start.

Depends on how you look at it really. If you keep the non S motor it's no problem. If you want to stick an S lump back in it you'd be looking at £3K + for a rebuilt engine. If it's got it's original shell and trim that'd be a plus but if not then there's little left is there ? (So that money could be a little strong then !) You'd have to see it and ask more questions.

I would want to do a lot of looking and checking first before I parted with £6,000. It depends on what specification you want but it seems to have a lot of extra holes in the body (for rear wiper and bonnet pins perhaps?) - photos are dreadful and show little of any use. To me, an 'S' with the wrong engine would be seriously devalued. No less fun to drive perhaps but devalued, Yes.
If you are interested, go and have a look, it's worth following up and even if you don't buy it, you'll come away with a bit more knowledge. Knowledge is power, so they say .

| Having viewed this car you basically got a shell requiring extensive restoration to bring to acceptable standard/standard 1300 engine.Sold with private reg with claimed value of £ 2000.00. Interior poor with non-standard fittings. In its favour, shell appeared genuine and few previous owners,4 i think.Sold for £4500.00!

At least you went to see it - essential with a car like that. It sounds as if the 'restoration' was not to a great standard then!? At least it seemingly had the original shell. Values of registration numbers are purely hypothetical and if you DO have something worth £2,000 wouldn't you at least tell people what it was! Of course he HAS to let it go with the car because it is impossible to sell/transfer it without the car having MOT and tax.....
There are a lot of Coopers on the market which just need "a little finishing" and most probably need more doing than the seller admits to before you'll have a truly uptogether car.
£6,000 was too much from your description. Good luck to the new owner.
