Folks,

I am now looking to fit an electronic ignition unit, what's the groups' experience and which should I choose for my Mark 2 S - does my enhanced state of engine tune mean there are pitfalls?

Aldon?

Lumenition?

I would prefer a "within the dsitributor cap" type to keep my engine bay as standard as possible?

Then of course once chosen, who supplies it the cheapest?

Cheers

Stuart

I use Lumenition within distributor. Not the cheapest but very efficient. Quite easy to fit. Bought from MiniSpares, Potters Bar. Plus of course yellow Marigold glove from local hardware store/supermarket.

Try H&H Ignition Solutions: http://www.h-h-ignitionsolutions.co.uk/index.htm  They can do anything you want, including curves matched to your engine spec. The only point to be aware of is their electronic units need a full 12volt feed, ie not ballasted. If you mail them they'll provide all the info you need, but, from experience, it may be a couple of days due to workload.

I run a Petronix electronic ignition in my Aldon Red distributor with a standard Lucas coil.  No problems at all installed in less than 10 minutes.  I don't know if they are availible in the UK, or maybe named differently.

We have a new distributor availible over here stateside called the 123 distributor which has a number of preset curves, and uses a standard Bosch distributor cap.  Here's a link, http://www.7ent.com/detail.cfm?pageid=2640

Everyone I've talked to really likes the 123 setup.

I believe Minispares, amongst others, stock the 123 in the UK.

Thank You Folks, I'm not looking to replace the OE distributor nor am I looking for anything to over the top, the simpler it is the less can go wrong is my approach,

So still unsure......Lumenition is in the lead unless anyone has any other thoughts?

Cheers

I've heard lots of good things said about that Megajolt system and how it will even work under water.

But I don't know how it would fair in the originality stakes.

As for Lumenition, well I've got a set of their red HT Leads (HV22) fitted to my Mini and their superb along with my NGK Spark Plugs.

I've no experience with any in the form you're intending using them but I ran an '81 V8 Range Rover with the original Lumenition unit, fitted by Rover to cure holding tune problems, which was 22 years old, and still going strong, when I got rid of it.

There's probably little difference between the Lumenition and Pertronix but on the above experience I'd go with the former.

I have a Pertronix in the Lucas dizzy of my Triumph Spitfire and it works fine, as well as looking almost original from the outside.  It is cheaper to buy Pertronix rather than Aldon.  I run it with a ballast resistor wire which in fact is left in circuit during starting - and starts OK every time.  The only comment I would make is that the tolerance on timing between cylinders is supposed to be less than 1 degree.  It is more like two degrees on mine.

I have never looked back since fitting my lumenition unit. Definitely fit and forget. You will be amazed at the difference from a normal points set up - definitely much smoother with very clean pick up from low revs. State of engine tune should make no difference, but speak to Steve Harris at "steve@harrismotorsport.co.uk (or 01725 517345) he supplied and carefully fitted mine.

As regards your Lucas reversing lamp, I fitted mine similar to the info you have already received but slightly higher so it did not completely obscure the "1275" badge. I did not have to drill a larger hole as the bolt came through just far enough for me to fit the securing nut OK.
