I have been lurking for a while and am destined to become an owner, probably a mk2 cooper, not an s. Would really like to find a red one, reg syd 199g as it has a very high sentimental value. but I cant wait for ever so I am now looking at other colours around that age
Not sure how to post a link but has anyone checked out item number 270196806696. This has been on before with a BIN price now up for auction. It looks excellent but I have been reading all the horror stories and now don't believe anything that is written on eBay, particularly about the 'trueness' of coopers. Everything in the pics look genuine but I am confused about the door stays, shouldn't they be straps not the wire stays. Anything else that points to it being a 'clone'?

The seller should be a double glazing salesman (if he's not already), offers around £8K ? ! He's dreaming, but if you could take all the stickers off the car it'd be a decent proposition for the right price, ie about £5K ish ?

The metal check straps are an aftermarket item. Should have the black fabric type checkstraps.
Car has been converted to dry suspension which could be an advantage depending on your preference. Looks like the R/H tank is not a genuine S tank.
Definately well overpriced at £8k

at the very least check the numbers all match etc
whatever it is, its 40 years old so thats alot of water under the bridge
i wouldn't get too concerned with details, in some ways if a seller is knowingly "passing off" he will get all these right anyway
its probably the case these days that if the car is not known to you from years past its safe to assume its not a Cooper
but then you would never buy one and thats a shame
Nothings changed, I had the same worries buying one in 1986, when if it had an ashtray with a lid and disc brakes it was a Cooper

Is it me or does the brake pedal look lower/level than the clutch pedal in the 2nd interior shot?

Methinks someone may have their registrations crossed
Is it me or is there something odd looking about the rear bulkhead on that Mk 2 Cooper?
The metal door check straps look very much like the ones available from Cosmic in the 1960's. The right hand tank is of Serck origins.

As others have said - it looks a fairly decent car - a bit 'overdone' and a bit overpriced for sure. Bought for his wife but she doesn't like it! No, nor would mine! She certainly wouldn't drive it with all the daft stickers on it anyway. It's only a 998 which would be a fun little car on the road but hardly a good competition car.
If you want one, go and look at it, read up as much as you can, ask about its history, make a judgement and make an offer. If it's any consolation more 998 Coopers are 'genuine' than the more valuable 'S' models.
And perhaps don't take too much notice of the tale about the man who 'nearly' bought it for £8,250......We've all 'nearly sold cars for good prices.
I reckon that a Mk2 Cooper in good nick AND at the right price is a good little fun car for the money. However, the right price should certainly be no more than around £5k in my opinion.....

Dont belive it. I've been a member for a nano second and everyone wants to help. no-one knows me from Adam (I'm not Adam by the way) and I am already feeling part of the mini family, thanks guys.
It took me 3 months to get any similar sort of response from the BM3W forum I once contributed to.
Anyway back to questions from answers
So whats wrong with the boot badge, is it the mk11 bit?
The details from the DVLA, is this real info for SYD 199G, and can I really ring them up and get them to contact the current owner, and get them to contact me!!!!
I thought if I didnt see it advertised it would be like a needle in a haystack, but the info so far has whetted my appetite to refrain from an 'unknown' car that the owner thinks is worth more than it should be and hold out for 'my' car
Any further help would be appreciated, but as I say I am already very grateful

The information is real and is obtainable from the DVLA online services website.

Yes, you can contact them do that. I did it for the Mini that my Dad bought new in '64 (and sold 6 months later). I had to write a letter to the present owner, send it to DVLA and they then sent it on for me. They charge £5.00 but for some reason returned the cheque to me. The owner contacted me shortly afterwards .
I think if there is a link with the car and yourself somewhere in the dim and distant past they are more forthcoming than if you have no connection.
The boot badges are positioned considerably too far up on the bootlid.
For the money I'd also expect to see outer sills of the correct type. The ones on the car look like Melbros/Veng type sills to me.

i think Mk 3 Meister might be alluding to the fact that the badges sit to high on the boot lid
they should be nearer the number plate

Welcome to the minefield of buying a Mini Cooper Foxy .
It's not unusual, as a famous Welsh geezer once sang, to have to pick through the details of a car like this one and find out all is not as it's described, so patience will be a useful tool in your quest fella. The rear bulkhead as the Meister has indicated isn't what it should be, looks like a doctored Mk3 panel to me ! Maybe it's been rear ended in the past , very odd for this panel to be replaced but not unheard of. If you're just looking for nice Cooper and not bothered about the detail then fine butyou'd be looking at just over half his asking price  . Poor detail or dodgy history will limit the value generally speaking but there again that 66 'S' with the '62 shell went for £18K big ones last week so what do I know ?!

Yep,finding a genuine Mk2 998 Cooper is even more thwart with problems than searching out a pukka Mk1 if you ask me due to the availability of plentiful 998 SDL shells (in the past).Passing off some factory looking bootboard brackets is about all that's needed as far as modifying the shell is concerned.The rest is pretty much bolt on.
And of course the ironic part is we all know a high percentage of Mk2 'S's probably started life out as plain old 998 Cooper's (same as above but substitute RH tank bracket).
But after all that don't be discouraged,the quest is well worth it in the end.If the the car's price is right it's equal amounts of research into details and gut feeling that will get you one that you're satisfied with.
