| The two or three persons that I know who have tried to refurbish hydrolastic units claimed that it is infeasible to dismantle them such that they can be put together again without loosing reliability...

| I believe there is a company in the Preston area that can fit new hoses - does anyone know more details?

I don't think anyone refurbishes them as they are a sealed unit so there isn't a lot of refurbing that you can do.
You might find some new old stock ones if you are lucky but S ones turn up very rarely.

Im sure i read somewhere about somebody cutting the pipes off and tapping a thread into the displacer so that a new pipe could be screwed in via a union.Im sure where the pipe goes in to the displacer is steel so a thread could be tapped in and a pipe with a union on made up at a decent hydraulic hose suppliers/et`c.
Hope this helps

Whilst surfing, as you do, came across this on Austin America site. Any use?

The original fluid is a mixture of water, alcohol and anti-corrosives. I've heard that it was actually tainted so it tasted bad because the factory workers were drinking it!
Harsh times! Is it true that replacing the hydro fluid with tractor diesel improves the ride no end?

BMC hydrolastic fluid was made up as follows:
49% alcohol
49% distilled water
1% triethanolamine phosphate (corrosion inhibitor)
1% sodium mercaptobenzothiazole
It was always tainted to make it undrinkable - it was a legal requirement even in the 1960's.
I should have thought diesel would give a much softer ride and probably degrade the insides of the displacers.

I have been using standard coolant as well, which actually works very well!
The last car using the hydrolastic suspension fuild is the MGF. So, you could still get it from your local "Rover" dealer...

| Wasn't Hydragas dumped when they started calling it the TF?
