There is usually a tag which starts 'F' and is followed by a series of numbers.

The F tag is presumably the number of the floor assembly. I'm not aware that anyone has ever compiled a list and they are not recorded in the Production Records.

I am always amazed that no one seems able to detail what the FE numbers were for. Surely there's an old Mini assembler/office worker who used to bung them on bodies or actually ordered or manufactured them who knows why they did it..

They're not simple hand stamped plates and someone went to significant trouble to manufacture/purchase them and then fix them to cars.

My S has two such plates; one on the radiator panel and one on the front floor roughly where the driver's heel rests.

Here in Oz the authorities use this number as my cars official chassis number as the "real" number is deemed illegal as its only temporarilly attached (screwed) to the chassis.

Cheers, Ian

The numbers are different. I'd have to go and check if someone wanted to know how far apar the numbers are.

We know that the FE Number was a count of the front end assemblys and that some are recorded in the Production Records and presumably the F was used for the same reason. However not all 1960s Mini's have an FE Number, it seems to depends on where the shell was built.

Just to clarify, The FE(front end)number is on the rad shroud, and the F(floor)number is on the floor.

I was told once that the MCR could date a shell within 2 weeks, by it's FE number.

BTW i would like an FE number for my 970S, as it was lost when the clubman front was installed. No good looking here, as none of the NZ assembled 'shells had them.

PM me if you can help.

Thanks,

James

Hi James,

Without being pedantic, the FE number is actually on the inner wing panel, sitting down against the radiator shroud.

Hi Al,

Not to be a pedant or anything, but on Gray's car, the FE number looks to be spot welded to the rad shroud upstand

:P

what colour should be bowl bit at the back of the lights be?

Mines a red mini but has been painted with a pale blue on the underside and the bowls are light blue?

Should they be black, grey or car colour so for me tartan red?
