Whilst piecing together my engine parts I noticed the difference in the way tappet chest covers were made

some are the in dent type and some the out dent type as shown in the picture below:

an other thing is the way the breather pipe is fixed to the cover is quite different

Am I right in thinking that the out dent type is the early one that changed to the in dent type at some point?

Are you sure the one in the picture is from a Mini? I am thinking that it might be from an A35/Minor or so. They have the longer tube down.

There is an even earlier type of cover that does not have the final edge pointing inwards or outwards. Tried to make a picture of that on a totally original late 1962 engine (850). Will need 3 posts to put all pictures in...

And this picture sows how the early ones look on a 1275S with positive crankcase ventilation and yes the one with the oil separator is quite hard to find ;)

the one in the picture I posted is with the rubber tube fitted with the clip to secure it on the backside of the block

I will try to get a picture online with the several different ones I have kicking about

The one in Toby's picture is the same as mine  [march '64 1071]. The reason for the 'strange' routing of the pipe is:-

1/ To try and keep the oil in the engine !:)

2/ To give clearance to the cooper type exhaust

The one on my 1071 is also like the one in the first picture too.  I have also had a 997 Cooper with a similar one, but I can't be sure that was original fitment.  I am however 99% sure the 1071 is.

I have just bought an original 1071 engine today. (Been after it for about 5 years). Should pick it up next week. I'll have a look at the covers then.

So does the 'dent out' type also have the rim that does not hold the gasket in - i.e. the lip goes away from the block, not towards it?

Correct James,

These type of covers had the annoying habit of the gasket slipping out of the side and sprewing the oil out:X  With the early cork gaskets it wasn't too bad but when the gaskets changed to the  more 'slippery' neoprene type it became much worse:X:X
The trick was to glue the gasket to the cover before fitting.

The later 'dent in' covers had a return on the flange to keep the gasket in place.

Picture is the early type.                                        regards Bob
