Hi;

 I recall reading a thread once regarding Identifying the origins of SU carbs by the letters/numbers on the float bowl lid ID tags?

Unsure if it was on this forum but I'd be much obliged if anyone in the know could point me in the right direction. I'm sure I have seen a list but can't remember where.

Cheers-

-Shane.

I have got an old SU parts manual with some details of what numbers are for what cars etc.

If you let me know what numbers you have I'll see what I can find out. PM me if necessary.

Hi there,

You can try Burlen's web site, http://www.burlen.co.uk It seems to have an exhaustive list. If you want the BMC carbs, the MK I and II carbs are in AKD5036 along with Austin Healey, MG, Riley, Vanden Plas and Wolseleys for cars up to about 1970. For early non BMC cars, use AKD5055. I have scanned copies of both.

Cheers, Keith

Above link above does not work - the dreaded full stop. If you want to check your tags use this page: http://www.burlen.co.uk/store.aspx . If you enter the tag number in the box above the search carburettors button you'll get application details and a list of spare parts.

Whoops, I always do that. I've edited it.

Just a note. The parts lists for the various carbs on Burlen's web site seem to have been made generic in a lot of cases. If you want part accuracy, use the part numbers from AKD5036 and it's likely that Burlen have it. So far this has been successful for me, at least for most Cooper (S) carb parts. A plaudit: so far I've found Burlen's service to be exemplary. Every order has been dispatched quickly and accurately. And no, I have no commercial interest in them at all.

Cheers, Keith

So, it turns out the carbs that came fitted to my Mk 3 S were originally mounted on an Innocenti Regent 1500cc.

I suppose any HS4's will do if thats what you want!

Does this win the award for most horrific looking manifold??:shock:

That probably makes them a very rare set of carbs as they didn't make many Regents which was the Italian version of the Allegro.

if you do use the carbs off another car other than a mini make sure the float bowls are at the right angle

they should be in the vertical position when fitted otherwise this could decrease performance
