Glen,
That thought did cross my mind as it's the trim I'm after and I do have an execellent plain powder blue trim set to replace it with However, I totally agree that it should be kept as it is. Don't think I've ever seen genuine Mini Super anywhere before, probably for the reason you mention!!!!

Hi there
I won the Super and don't worry- I am having it restored as I am a bit of a fan of these cars. Out of interest, I also have an Austin Super in Almond green and a Morris one in Smoke Grey and both are complete and have their original interiors.

Hi Sal,
Great to hear it's going to a good home. Are you trying to corner the market in Super Mini's?
It does look a very honest, original car and definately deserves to be preserved in the corect specification.

I'll let someone else buy the next one that comes along It was so lovely to see one come up that has not been messed about with. I have seen them where they are barely recognisable as Supers, which is a great shame. I have been very luck with mine I think

| It's a bit of a waiting game with these. I got one in 1999, my second one in 2002 and now this one came up. The second one had been bodged with a "paint job from hell" but all its Super bits were there. The first one was amazing - untouched.

What was wrong with the paint job from hell? Did someone try to paint it using a vacuum cleaner working in reverse -more orange peel than a Jaffa or forgot to mask anything up? A few years ago I saw what looked like an almost concours Hornet at a show. Looked superb but then the owner opened the bonnet - Oh Dear - he forgot to do under the bonnet. The engine, wiring and everything done in pale blue overspray!!!!

The paint was really thick and was totally the wrong green. It had been flung about all over the place, including on the glass. The joker who did it would have bought the car in its original conditon too. Oh and the roof looked hand painted and there were bits of gravel in the roof channel which had been painted over !!!!
I like the story about the overspray on the engine. I must say I have seen a mighty fine example of this on a Racing Green and I suspect it was done with aerosols from Halfords !

Sounds nice a nice job - I particularly like the gravel in the gutter!!!! A gallon of Nitromors is in order then !!!
The bloke with the Hornet left the bonnet up to 'display' the fine paintwork - I was admiring the car up to then but had to walk away! Never understood anyone who doesn't take a little time to mask up

| I had the Super restored and they have got it back to its correct colour of Almond Green and done an excellent job. You're right about people not masking. It doesn't take that much effort !

I did bid on the Surf blue Super on Ebay but lost out to Sal ! Well done, what sort of nik was it in, photos can be so decieving.
I have to say it does look untouched, hence my interest. I'd have gone a few bob more if I'd actually seen it in the flesh , but four hundred mile round trip just to lose it wouldn't have gone down too well with the 'Mrs' !
Last time I saw one was at Bingley about fifteen years ago, another Surf example, rarer than hen's teeth.
Just shows you though how under-valued they are, I mean a 100 % original S in that condition would have fetched a substantial sum and an enormous amount of interest (I've only seen one Mk 1 'S' like that in the last few years ...and I bought it ! )
There really should be a place in the MCR for Supers, far more interesting than BMWs ! Just hasn't got the 'right' badge on. 
There was an ex - Sprinzel early GT on there too last week, really like early GT's, shame the MCR can't accomodate these interesting little cars in a 'non Cooper register' .

I haven't seen the car yet, but the person who sold me my other two Supers has !!!! She also sent me the pics and a running commentary about what she thought were the good and bad points about this car. It is on her doorstep, you see, and I trust her implicitly. I also got her "Mini Guru" take a look and advise me too. This is not the fist time I have bought a Super without seeing it first. When I bought "Joe" he had a terrible paint job, but this had been described in a more than honest way so I wasn't exactly in a state of shock when I saw it !!!!
What pleases me about this one is that everything is there. The interior is the best brocade inerior that Julie has ever seen. The funny thing is that with each Super that I buy, the interiors just get better !
For me the attraction is that the Super is a beautiful car, with all the MK1 Cooper trappings apart from the engine, of course, and I can buy that car at less than a MK1 Cooper price, which suits me (and probably Him Indoors and my financial advisor !) fine. Only people on the Mini scene seem to know what they are...go to a classic car show and it is just another old Mini. I must say I found one exception at a classic car show when I got my first Super....I met a guy who used to turn Supers into Coopers as a business back in the sixties and he knew what my car was.

Hi Sal, Glen and Co,
Can you please explain to a down-under colonial what a Super Mini is? I have never heard of such a thing, the only thing I recall that might be close in name is a Super DeLuxe??

In the simplest of terms it is a "Poor man's Cooper" ...for your money you get a Mk1 Cooper shell (in a two tone paint scheme although some of the really early ones were monotone and some had grey roofs rather than white)and Mk1 Cooper interior and all that jazz, but you only get the 850 engine with a magic wand gear change. Oh and you get a unique grille with the clip on vertical sections- for both marques. I think they were overpriced for the market in comparison with the Cooper, hence loads got converted. Does this help or have I bored you to death ???

Thanks for that! No, you didn't bore me at all. I haven't been able to open your photo attachments and would really like to see a photo of one. Could I trouble you to send one or two please. al@southernviking.co.nz I have never heard of such a machine down this way and the value-for-money scenario is possibly the reason.

Al , the reason you've never heard of a Super, is probably that VERY few exist and they were only made for a couple of years ('61 / '62 ? ), wonder how many were made ?
The Super wasn't just the poor man's Cooper, it in fact preceded the Cooper. When John Cooper decided to warm up the original 850cc engine to a 997 and stick little disc brakes on it to produce the Mini Cooper they merely used the existing Super as a base as it already had the luxury of two tone paint, extra chrome, door trims, brocade interiors, vinyl dash, boot board etc....and so was born the Mini Cooper !
Sal, why do you need three ? Or is that a dumb question......
