Hi Folks,

Been speaking to the gentleman selling the Almond Green Cooper on Ebay.....

All going well except for a point he made about the replacement of the front wings, the join between the wing and the are below the windscreen at each corner no longer has the seam filler join but just smoothed over, should this be of concern?

Cheers

Stuart

I suppose it depends what is underneath. The wings should be OK as they are new, providing they are a good fit in that area but the main concern is the condition of the scuttle ends (panel beneath windscreen). This is a major rust spot on Mini's. If the scuttle panels are sound then the filler could be removed and the seam correctly finished off. Obviously it will mean the scuttle panel and front wings needing painting again and there's always the possibility of the paint not matching. Can the vendor provide photos of the areas?

Regards

Andrew

I'd echo what Andrew said there , I have to say I hate it when filler is applied with a shovel between the wing and scuttle and smoothed into a slope. A very common trick in times gone by to save a bodger  repairing/replacing the scuttle which is not an easy panel to tackle. That filler is bound to crack and looks naff.

It's all a matter of what you want, and how much the car is .The rest of the car could be very good (though it's a bad sign) and for the right price could be fixed.

That red and white Mk1'S' I've definately seen around, so is  worth checking with the MCR Mk1 'S' registrar (have you joined the MCR yet Stuart ? ;) ). Loads of incorrect detail with that one, and being sold by a guy who gives brief and misleading descriptions so I'd tread very carefully.

Piece of cake this Cooper lark eh ? All good fun. :D

Hang on , now have a look at the ad for that Island Blue white Mk1 'S' (Mk2 shell). Take a good luck at the interior shot of the rear window. Now have a look at the very similar shot of the rear window of the red/white car belonging to the same seller. Compare the two !

Are you thinking what I'm thinking ? Can lightening strike twice ?

Hmmm.... regulator in standard/Cooper position. No spare wheel clamp, different colour boot board brackets, double skin Mk 2 bootlid, dodgy looking tank link pipe, definately a Mk2 rear window, Mk2 lower dash rail.

Dodgy or what :X

Andrew

PS - didn't see other pics when I posted my comment 'this one looks good' :D

Hi Stuart,

Well, that's a Cooper or S chassis number prefix and the engine number appears to be an S number. But it doesn't alter the fact that it is a Mk2 shell with Mk1 rear lights. The position of the regulator and fuse box is not correct for a Cooper S, it is correct for a 998 Cooper or standard Mini.

It may well have been a genuine Mk1 S originally but it looks very much like a reshell job.

The numbers are important obviously but in some respects somewhat academic if the car sat in front of you is a Mk2 Mini 1000 with a bunch of unrelated and repro 'S' bits screwed to it.

It's down to preference really isn't it.I've had a few reshelled cars, the last being a '65 'S' reshelled into an early pre Cooper Mk1 shell. I actually liked the car though cos it had continuous history and all the parts were original to that car.On the other hand there's cars like that one out there 'who's provenance may prove to be rather illusive', ie it's possibly been knocked up from a log book ,a heap of bits and a Mk2 shell with little regard to detail. Still a fun car, but you wouldn't want to pay much for it and they sometimes have a twin ! :P

Easily done, you sell your one owner from new classic to someone from Japan then either keep hold of the V5C if they don't need it for import purposes or apply for another V5C and build another car and sell it to someone in the USA and then apply for another V5C and build another car and sell it to someone in the Czech republic and of course build one for the UK as well.

There you go, four different cars on three different continents all with the same chassis numbers and four happy owners; that's what I call customer service!
