A car with an 852XXX chassis number would have been built May 1966 ish so it should have a right hand tank.

Engine number 44XXX dates from December 1966 at the earliest. I'm not even sure that it is an S engine and it certainly does not have the correct solenoid bracket.

Yes, the cylinder block could be later, the frost plug looks a little small somehow. The aluminium tag on the bulkhead is a plate attached by the Land Transport Safety Authority so it has been re-registered. I would say it is a 998 that has had a 1275 fitted and wrongly identified as a Cooper S.  So bold of the seller to say "yes, it is genuine".  Genuine what, I wonder!

Well our Meister should be able to date that FE number.

Seems to be an increasingly common site  nowadays, the early Mini with reissued reg number. There's a few of 'asset strippers' out there for sure, sad really, but where there's muck as they say........:?

The FE number dates to November 1959 and why you would think it was one of the first 800 when the chassis number is clearly shown in the 8000's is beyond me.

Oh, goodness the seller has modified his story a little!  I wonder if a couple of e-mails from me got him a little frightened!

A friend of mine, who also loves Supers, emailed this to me yesterday with some unrepeatable comments on it. Unbelievable :(

The good news is that my latest acquisition is coming along nicely now, a slow but steady job ....there are some things which just cannot be rushed and the restoration of a Surf Blue Super is one of them. :)

Glad to hear your restoration is progressing Sal.  My Surf Blue 'S' is in a similar condition to your Super, I'm looking around for a decent bodywork man, who've you entrusted yours to ?

Sad about the old Super innit ? Not seen a Tartan Red and black one before, shame it couldn't have been restored. I'm sure if you'd not have saved that Surf one it would have met a similar fate.

I've got "Humphrey" at the Mini Hospital in Northampton. Bob did my 1962 Super (Joe), reshelled my 1989 Flame (Fred)  and restored Harry, my 1968 MK2 850. He is good !!!!! He has a particular thing about Humphrey and I knwoothis car is going to be brilliant !!!! What is so lovely about Humph is that he is complete and there are no rare bits that are going to be a problem. When I saw him on ebay I definitely saw way beyond those pics on there and knew that he really could have his day again.

There is someone local who looks after my cars and he restored Alfie, my 1961 Smoke Grey Super and this guy is brilliant and so totally dedicated. Unfortunately the word gets around so he is really inundated. Somehow the Aston Martin people have found his name from somewhere !!!!

That's an interesting 'family' you have there Sal !

I've had that many poor resto's done over the years, and seen so many others have major let downs, it's interesting to hear of a good recommend. I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of mates who've NOT been ripped off , had to have remedial work done on their cars or have them repainted. Early Minis, easy to restore ? Easy to cock up ! :?

Yup, old 'Humphrey' did look very complete, even down to the original carpet ?

Good luck with him Sal

The trouble is there seem to be a lot of Mini "Farms" springing up all over the place, all claiming to be experts. I bet some of them have never been near an early Mini ! It is brilliant to find someone you have faith in and can rely upon. I saw a MK2 that had been "restored" and the owner had bunged thousands at the people doing it.....it was an absolute disaster and the owner must have been really stupid to hand over all this money. The work hadn't even been completed and the car was a shed. It ended up at a more well known and respected Mini place to be sorted out....yet again needing more money throwing at it. The owner should have taken the first lot to court, I reckon. I just think I have been incredibly lucky in making the right contacts :D

Some of the best bodywork jobs I've seen have been DIY restos. Just a matter of convincing those people to do yours ! On the other hand I had a 998 done quite a few years ago by a well known (at the time) specialist which turned into a very prolonged affair with patchy results. The ill fitting doors being the most obvious 'oversight' :? .

I'm convinced that if a good restorer set up doing early Minis only, with a good reputation, he (or she) would have 'em queueing round the block waving ther wonga in the air. There's plenty at it, not too many with a great reputation though.I'll check your man out Sal.

seems cheap at that price if its what he says it is.

floor surely must have been changed though, if the doors/bulkhead are green and its red...
