Having the gearbox discussion in ka2sa's thread is maybe distracting from the 970 topic over there, so let's have a separate thread on them. Wanted to get a list of the correct gearbox casing numbers. Parnell himself told me that the information in his book is rather incomplete. Can we get to a complete list here? Additions/Corrections are very welcome!
I have been able to confirm the ones with a * on cars. Remarks at the end.
Mini Mk I
22A104: Cone synchro magic wand rubber joint
22A363: Cone synchro magic wand rubber joint
22G68: A type (22A381 laygear) or B type (22G231 laygear) magic wand rubber joint (*) (1)
22G382: B type (22G231 laygear) magic wand rubber joint (*)
Cooper Mk I
22G68: A type (22G76 or 22G197 laygear for 997 and 22G204 laygear) or B type (22G232 laygear for 998) remote rubber joint (*) (2)
Cooper S Mk I
22G190: A type (22G204 laygear) or B type (22G232 laygear) remote on 970/1071 rubber joint (*) (3)
22G333: B type (22G232 laygear) remote on 970/1275 rubber joint or Hardy Spicer(*) (4)
Mini Mk II
22A1288: 3-synchro B-type (22G231 laygear) magic wand rubber joint
22G1128: 4-synchro (22G927 laygear) remote rubber joint (*)
Cooper Mk II
22A1228: 3-synchro B-type (22G232 laygear) remote rubber joint (see below, casing number should be 22A1288)
22G1128: 4-synchro (22G927 laygear) remote rubber joint
Cooper S Mk II
22A1522: 3-synchro (22G232 laygear) remote Hardy Spicer (*)
22G1128: 4-synchro (22G1040 laygear) remote Hardy Spicer (*)
Cooper S Mk III
22G1128: 4-synchro (22G1040 laygear) remote Hardy Spicer
Remarks:
1) There exit casings with and without two round moldings on the fins at the front side and I was only able to confirm for B-type (22G231 laygear)
2) I was only able to confirm 22G232 laygear for 998
3) I was only able to confirm 22G232 laygear for 970
4) Difference between the engine sizes is that the 22G333 for 970 misses the notch cut out at the radiator - front corner. Hardy Spicer only on 1275 of post May 66.
5) 22G232 laygear has been renumbered to 22G1100
Andrew, if your 68 Cooper is an earlier 3-synchro, is the gearbox casing number indeed 22A1228 or could it also be 22A1288 with remote? I have a 22A1288 remote casing. Don't know for which car that is. Maybe Hornet/Elf?
I also have a 22G846 4-synchro remote casing with 22G1040 laygear and Hardy Spicer. I guess that is 1300GT or so?

| Good morning - some additional info for you . My 1300Gt g/box is a 22G1128 and the G/box on my Mk1 S is 22G846 VF2 Stamped with no 2085 . The laygear is 22G1040. The s was raced in the 70's and 80's so can't say if the items are original fit . Regards Bruce

i've got a 22G1522 gearbox with laygear (22G232) all as per 22G333 Mk1 cooper S
not quite sure where this fits into your lists!
Also was a Jan 1966 cooper S using Rubber joints or hardy spicer type

I guess you meant 22A1522 instead of 22G1522? If not, then I don't know...
A 22A1522 gearbox with 22G232 laygear is for an early Mk II S (which had Hardy Spicer joints) as in the list. Such a gearbox would indeed use exactly the same gears as a 22G333 gearbox for a Mk I S. Notice that 22A1522 is a much rarer casing than the 22G333.
A January 1966 Mk I S would have a 22G333 gearbox with 22G232 laygear and rubber joints as the change point to Hardy Spicer was around May 1966. According to AKD3509, the engine number at which Hardy Spicer joints were introduced is 9FSaY 41234.

sorry about that it is 22A1522.
I managed to find a complete one of these about a year ago in very good condition in order for me to transfer the gears over to a 22G333 case which was also hard to find (well at the right price).
Thanks for info on the rubber joints my engine number is 9F-SA-Y/40079. i can make sure i put the right ones back on when the rebuild starts again on the box.

Hello!
Have you still got the 1522 case, and if so do you want to sell? Let me know Thanks, Ronnie.

Last week, radforman and I had a look through 50 gearboxes and discovered some new misteries...
One is a new casing number 22A145 for a cone synchromesh box and we also discovered an 22G846 that was originally fitted to a Hornet.
Another mistery are the 22A1288 and 22A1228. We have started to wonder whether the 22A1228 actually exists or that some typo turned up in one of the lists that I used to post the first message in this thread.
@Andrew1967: PM sent about the 22A1228 casing...
I intend to make the list more complete with the numbers for the later rod change gearboxes later this week...

Great list!
Another that pops ups sometimes is the 22A1128 - not ever fitted to Minis though. It is an early 1300 3 synchro and has the larger bosses along the front to clear the 1275 engine. Would be the same as a 333 or 1522 but was fitted with the rubber sandwich remote diff housing.

what would a
GEARBOX CASING - 22G1128 MOWOG
GEARBOX LAYGEAR - 22G927
CROWNWHEEL/PINION 64/17
be out of? a clubman? do you know what ratios would be on that laygear?

Thanks Mini4Ever, that will be interesting and I'm sure mine (90' Mainstream Cooper) starts DAM?

Assuming that it has a Mini remote diff housing, I would suspect this to be from a very late Mini 850 or Mini 1000 (although the latter should have had 3.44 instead of the 3.76 you mention). The gears are standard ratio.
I will try to post the complete list tomorrow - still compiling it (and there are 4 different DAM numbers so far)

Well, it took somewhat longer than expected but here is a first attempt. Please note that I don't know much about post 1980 cars, which you can see from the amount of info/remarks in the lists regarding those cars. Any additions and corrections etc are very welcome for all lists. More confirmations of what is originally fitted to cars is very welcome too!
Notice: this is a first (eh... second) attempt and it will most probably contain imperfections!
@earlycar: the 22A76 number you quote is a part number not a casing number
To make everybody really happy, I intend to make another list with the gearing ratios for all laygear types that I know the ratios of. But that's for later this week or so

My 1990 Mainstream Mini Cooper has "DAM 5626" as the casing number.
But there's also "A/BZ3
BC"
Stamped there too, but I don't know if that's relevant?
The only thing I don't understand from you're fantastic PDF file, is the fact that remark 35 relates to Rover Cooper Variants and yet mine appears to fall under remark 34 (Mini 1000, 1275) because I know it has 3.1 pot joint "Final Drive" and it's a 1275cc engine "12A with suffix G01".
So I guess the "Rover Cooper Variants" really relates to the SPi models only?

Thanks for that Taffy. As indicated, I am not very well informed on the later models and you are probably right by stating that this part is not 100% ok. I hope to gather more info on these cars to improve the list. So, any help is very much appriciated! When I have sufficient data for imrpoving the list, I will post an update.
I already got the following remarks from Nick Rogers:
- The 22G1128 sandwitch remote boxes for the 1100 all had 4.1 final drive ratio
- The Mk2 Hornet/Elf had chrome magic wands
- The A+ Metro box also cam with 3.65 final drive ratio in the Metro Van
- And the Metro Turbo had 3.2 final drive ratio
Nick thinks that the SM, A/BZ, WF/Y etc numbers are related to the actual manufacturer of the casing. BUT, this is just a thought and not confirmed by any means and I put these 3 examples here from my head - so there might be a typo in especially the last example.

What exactly do you mean with "G box"? Do you mean 22G1128 or 22G1832 or do you refer to something completely different?
