I have been starting to assemble the 970.
Wow! it is begining to look like a car
I used some good S/H door rubbers,and had to bend the flange that the rubber sits on quite a bit in places,but the doors sit nice and flush and shut with a satisfying "click-clack"
Whilst on the subject of things 970, how many other genuine factory 970S's are there arround?
I heard somewhere that there were only 6 known in the UK

Hi,
I can think of 7 that I've known of in my short time back as a mini nut.
1.Sussex sports cars XFX515B red/black.
2.Sussex sports cars CFD777C red/black.
3.Rougeleo's CDD371C red/black.
4.Ralliart sold one a couple of weeks back - went to see it was originally tweed grey/white.
5.FYP741C also on this forum tweed grey/white.
6.Yours obviously.
7.Oh and a bloke I know of in Bodmin,cornwall sold a red/black project a few months on E-bay.

Congratulations! It is looking great! No, surf blue is No1 for me and I would paint mine that colour if I could find an interior to match!
The 970 is certainly rare, but I know of at least 6 myself. John Kelly would be able to tell you how many are on the register which would be a start.
The door fit shown in the pic looks spot-on, better than new probably! I'm at the (pre-painting) door fitting stage with mine and it is no fun......

Wow. Very nice looking car in construction and the door fits perfectly!
I know of two complete 970S's and one of which there is basically only the engine left. All three are from Belgium although one of them is currently in my garage undergoing a restoration (for a friend).

Hi Guys, mine is a long time from getting to this stage but progressing. I think I remember a list of 970's in JK's section of the comic stating that worldwide there are about 56ish know to the register, so I imagine there will be quite a few in the UK, suprising as they were not that popular and a lot will have died on the track as they were enjoyed!! However of that 50+ I wonder how many are genuine and not built from the ashtray up !!

| Good point Gray. The one that my friend is restoring and which I mentioned above has already its second reshell and was fairly incomplete. However, the engine, interior and documents where correct and original of that car. Actually I found him a correct 22G333 gearbox for 970S, which lacks that notch cut out at the radiator front side (needed big repair near idle gear bearing though)!

Hey Droid,
what a coincidence!I just bought a set of 5 3.5 inch S wheels off a bloke, Keith,in Bodmin.
He said he had recently sold a 970S I think he said it was red/black.
It,s a small mini world

Gearboxes!!! Just part way through rebuilding mine using only nos gears, bearings, selectors, what a nightmare to find these bits (thanx Andrew for all your help sourcing parts) any nos 232 laygears or 1st gears out there would be welcome.

Did the same with the gearbox for my own 1275S. No luck with the 232 laygear either - only found loads of 231 in NOS  . At some point, I actually had eight 22G333 boxes so that I was able to use the best laygear of all these. Later I discovered that the 998 Cooper used the same laygear (would have been cheaper to source boxes for that)...
In the end, I was able to use a NOS reverse gear, 2nd and 3rd as well as all three selector rods, the two forks and all bearings. Yes, even the double row bearing that still has the metal inner cage and not the malfunctionous (is that proper English?) nylon one as with the new type. Took years but at some day I decided that I couldn't wait any longer... 8 years after the engine was rebuilt it now finally sits on the rebuilt box. Almost ready to also put the clutch housing on (hard to find a correct one that is still good around the idler bearing) now that I found a NOS oil pump as well.
For the 1st gear, I was temped to buy one from Mini Spares but in the end choose the best used one of those that I had...

Malfunctionous( thats too much of a mouthful to say ) crap is a better technical term!! I'm at about where you got but only in 3 months of looking so I'm not doing too bad then. Pre-ebay must of been hard to find these holy grails.Flywheel housings are not too hard to find around the shows but you have to look hard to see the part numbers through the years of gunge!! You could of made a fortune with those gearboxes on ebay, £220 for a crap box at beaulieu!!wrong diff housing as well.

No problem mate. Only glad I sourced the NOS parts and rebuilt my Mk2 Cooper box when I did.

We also have the Arden engineering 8port here in NZ (ex Alec Poole)Not sure if this was factory 970 though.
Of course there are a number of engines about,as they were sold for motor sport use.

No problem mate. Only glad I sourced the NOS parts and rebuilt my Mk2 Cooper box when I did.
Andrew, got a question for you in the new gearbox thread.
I was also able to find NOS idler (with the equally sized shaft at both ends) and NOS primary gear...

Yes,Keith that's him.He was very much the collector but is now getting out of all his mini's.He had a very late black mk2 'S' on e-bay recently that was originally aqua and still has what remains of a re-shelled 1071s.
