I will soon be undertaking major work on my Mk II Cooper 998. Whilst the engine etc. is out it has been suggested this may be a good time to go for a 'dry' conversion.
An awkward decision needs to be made! I am currently using the car and therefore the installation can be seen operating on the vehicle, so hopefully dispelling any doubts about its condition. The subframes are very good and all the displacers are working fine with no leaks etc. There are plastic link pipes installed. The mechanic could find no faults with the installation at all.
The car is booked in for work at the beginning of March and the system/subframes etc. would be available for collection from the workshop in Ashford, Kent at this time. If I get a good offer for this it may convince me this it the time to convert....Please contact me if you are interested.

Hi Roger,
Any particular reason you're converting to dry suspension? Handling is better but the ride is not as nice. Only recently converted my Mk2 back to Hydro!
Best way to sell the complete unit whiilt it's still pressurised though.
All the best
Andrew

hi Andrew,
A difficult decision this one; I wasn't planning on this, but I have been to a Mini specialist for advice on an engine rebuild etc. and surprise surprise the project is starting to expand!!! I did own a 93 Cooper with dry suspension right up to last week, so I know what the handling and ride is like between the two systems, I think overall I prefer the dry. My system as detailed is fine, but I don't often let a Mini specialist loose on my car. Whilst the other work is being carried out it will be cost effective to replace the system and they propose other refinements that should make the handling pin sharp (if a little firmer). I intend to keep my Cooper long term and the dry system will give me plenty of scope for alterations and up-keep.
My car isn't concours (I think I'd be frightened to use it if it was), but the hydro system is in very good order; I assume if I sell the installation it would surely end up on a Cooper in far better condition than my own; I'd be quite happy if it helps someone else put their Cooper into pristine order.
The final reason is that it will help finance the rebuiling and installation of a much better original Cooper engine for my car (the existing set up is a bit of a hotch-potch!). I am rescuing a Cooper 998 engine on Monday. Hopefully I will be bringing more genuine Cooper engineering back into life than I would be losing. I've also been accumulating various other correct parts (airboxes!) etc. that will be raising the cars standard. Regards, Roger

But surely a 93 Cooper will have the later softer springs anyway.
Or did you mean a 63 Cooper?

The'93 Cooper was sold last week and was fitted with standard dry suspension.
I have a '69 Cooper 998 with a Hydrolastic system; I am trying to sell the system for this.
Note this is to be advertised elsewhere. Are you interested in buying the hydrolastic installation detailed above?
regards,
Roger

Hi Roger,
My original plan was just to rebuild the gearbox in my Cooper. Then I decided to revert back to Hydro, then strip the engine bay and respray it all...Same old story!!!
Dry suspension is much better for 'tuning' and much less problematic, I'd have to agree. I had a few teething problems but all seems ok now (was the last time I went into the garage its sitting in anyway!!)
Hope all goes well with the work. Will it be done for the spring/summer seasons?
All the best
Andrew
PS - haven't found any oval air boxes yet but keeping both eyes open

| Take it you saw these listed yesterday on Ebay - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Mark-1-Mini-Cooper-S-GENUINE-ORIGINAL-air-cleaner_W0QQitemZ270085579370QQihZ017QQcategoryZ43122QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem and http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MINI-COOPERS-Mk2-Mk3-AIRBOX_W0QQitemZ250079825639QQihZ015QQcategoryZ43122QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Thanks for the info. I'll be watching them.
A NOTE FOR ANYONE WHO MIGHT BE GETTING CONFUSED;
THE HYDROLASTIC INSTALLATION AS DETAILED IS STILL FOR SALE
I think if it does not already exist a separate thread for discussing the pro's and con's of wet/dry suspension should be set up elsewhere on the forum; I'd certainly be interested in other peoples views.
thanks, Roger

| The second air box link (for the one that has been blast cleaned) is not correct for a Mk 1 or Mk 2 as it has the cut of corner.

No spare boot lids, sorry..
I have yet to find the inclination to advertise the subframes etc on Ebay, as sadly no-one seems to want them here. Send me a PM if you want to make an offer. Not sure about shipping though....I am just about to go out, so there may be a delay in getting back to you if you reply to this.
